While changing the battery in a smoke detector the other day I realized I have more money tied up in guitars Marshalls and recording gear than home furnishings yet nothing is insured. Can it just be added to home owners or is there a better way?How about accurate appraisals etc....Any information on this subject and where to start would be very helpful.

Christopher:

My agent told me that I can add the instruments and equipment to the Home insurance, via a special rider. He said to make sure I don't say it's a "guitar collection". Insuring "collectibles" apparently involves higher cost. Your mileage may vary, according to your insurance carrier.

Original purchase receipts would be the first place to start with valuation. After that, you'd probably have to ask your agent what the insurance company will accept as a valid appraisal. If you've got good stuff that is likely to raise in price over the next few years, add some extra $$$ into the "insured amount".
