Is it me or have the prices for Ibanez guitars been creeping up over the last year.

Here's a somewhat extreme example, this is an '86 AS200 with some scratches on the back that went for $1540.00. This is several hundred higher than the norm.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=1496096700

The "deals" that were common for Ibanezes are much harder to come by. Anybody else feel the same way?

No, it's not your imagination! Although there are still good deals out there, and prices seem to have a wide "spread", the general trend is upward.

One of the local shops sold a 2663 Iceman for $1200 last month. I thought that was outrageous!

Part of the rising price of the AS200 has to do with the new John Scofield model (JSM100) which retails for $2499. This is like a thousand dollar jump from the AS200, on which it is based.

Maybe this is a smart move on Ibanez' part (and good for us collectors too). It's funny how if you ask an outrageous price for something, as long as you are positioned right, people will think "wow, it must be good if it cost's that much, I'll take one". I learned this from running my own business.

Can't argue with the sentiments although prices in Oz are generally still reasonable for anything without a Fender / Gibson or Gretsch badge on it. In terms of private sales this is even more the case but they are getting rarer.
My last couple of purchases here were (1) An AM205 in VG condition and all original (from a dealer) for US$625 (2) a good condition (2) a good condition 2402 twin for US$600 (from a dealer again) and (3)an all original 2350 LP Custom in VG condition for US$160 from a private seller.
None the less the impact of e-bay pricing which some of our delaers are aware of is having an impact and no doubt it will continue to.
I buy guitars to play - not to look at - so I guess I'll get frozen out of the market sooner or later.

Guys,

Maybe the AS200 sold for so much was because it's the Holiday Season! Lot's of people exercise Christmas as a time to treat themselves to stuff they wouldn't usually buy during any other season of the year. Also I might add that just maybe there is finally some "NEW BLOOD" coming into enlightenment about older and vintage Ibanez guitars! This "New Blood" brings new dollars. New people who are just starting to collect and are willing to play a little more to get there first or second Ibanez guitar than most of us already enlightened collectors. ...hum! So it's different from the same old guys trading the same old guitars amongst the same old people. (That is what's happening at most of the Guitar Shows)!!! The person who Won the AS200 has "O" zero Feedback on Ebay. They very well could be the new life blood we all need to help keep things ALIVE and KICKIN!

Yep, I'd have to agree with you guys. I too noticed a seemingly sharp increase in the past few months. I just sold my '78 IC210 on ebay for the "buy it now" price of $600. I figured I'd never get that for it. And in one day - it sold, for almost two hundred more than I paid 18 months ago. Even with incorrect tuners and pickup. I dunno...maybe I just got lucky - or maybe it IS the holidays...anyway the money's already bought an '82 IC400 that I've sought for many months now...well, honestly - for 20 years! Ever since I sold my brand new one back in '83. She's not 'new' like I pictured in my head all these years...

Ahhh...but it's great to hold her once again! And squeeze a few delightful notes from her long bound neck, adorned with pearl and abalone......well - you all pretty much know how THAT feels :)

Have a great Christmas, guys!

Hmmm, must be a prototype ...

Could be a rush to get the auction started, 12/20 was the "no auction fee" day on ebay.

"prototype" LMMFAO !! Funny stuff, Fred.
Perhaps it's a model IC-OOPS...

It's rather ironic that this topic of increasing prices comes up now. With the economy depressed, folks out of work, and Christmas shopping depleting wallets, I have seen more than one rather desperate looking eBay auction this month. Saddens me when I see gear being peddled for financial reasons. Been there, done that, and it sucks.

There's an AS200 ('88 I think) on eBay for $1999! Looks to be in good condition (they could have at least cleaned the fingerprints off the guitar for the photographs... go figure). Wow, I remember late model AS200s going for as little as $800 in early '01.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1507183160

Yes, all you current AS200 owners are lucky indeed. Us non-AS200 owners ain't so lucky.

Funkle:

That one is an '80, not an '88.

Here's another AS200 on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1507595339

It's an '81, excellent condition, OHSC and the reserve is $1400.

John,

Yes, I saw that one on eBay this morning. So I realize that there is some added value (or appeal perhaps) as a "vintage" 80s piece, but is there a quality difference? It is my impression that the 90s and the current Ibanez products produced in Japan are every bit as good as vintage ones. This being true, why wouldn't I just pick up a new AS200 for $1100? There are still available outside of the US, in fact, I even found a place in Japan that will sell me one of the sexy blonde colored ones available there delivered right to my front door for $1085US! I wonder what that would fetch on eBay? :)

Russ,

That's a great idea. I should be doing that. You don't happen to have the prices for AS200s, AS180s and AM series guitars do you?

The guy with the '81 AS200 just dropped his reserve to $1150.

Here goes -

AS200
1980 about 9.0 $986.

AM50
1984 8.0 $605

AM100
1977 8.0 $375

AM200
1977 9.0 $928

AM205
1983 8.5 $855
1984 9.0 $975
1983 9.0 $1175

AM255
Only a couple of current ones.

Hope this helps a little.
At the end of 6 months I'll drop these into a spreadsheet for everyone to look at as I've also included comments on changes that have been made.
I must admit to a little bias (sorry but with time restrictions etc.) as I've only covered the Artists, Concord Acoustic 6 & 12, ES175's, ES335's, George Bensons, Les Pauls, Musicians, Performers, Studios and SG Copies up to 1985 (plus the odd thing that catches my eye).
Apologies therefore to the Flying V, Roadster / Roadstar, etc. etc. fans.

Cheers

Hi everybody!

FYI, A few weeks ago I was in the bay area and there's a very nice AS 200 at Phils Guitars in San Francisco (www.philsguitars.com for pictures). Very nice for $995. I would have picked it up myself but my wife went nuts at Christmas and bought me a paisley Tele (something I always wanted) so I am broke!

Even the Les Paul copys are starting to get on up there, I bid on one at e-bay for 180.00 and lost out to someone eventually shelling out 255.00...
That's ok though, I was looking for a model 2391 in the antique white/gold hardware, an almost exact copy of my Gibson. (bolt-on neck, chambered out body on the Ibanez) This is a very acceptable instrument for those wanting the look and feel of the Gibby.

Here's a little more information on the place in Japan that will ship to the USA.
This link will get you there:

http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/webshop/world/guitar/ibanez/

It says "2000" or "2001" catalog, but the guitars offered are current. I contacted someone there and verified this.

There are several very cool models available only in Japan, all of which are available here, These include:

AM200
AF200
AS200 (available in blonde!)

And the really cool part about it is that the prices are great as a result of the exchange rate. All of these guitars are available for approximately $1085US delivered. the exchange rate is 132.76 YEN = 1 USD. Delivery supposedly takes a week. I don't know for sure if they will sell US models, but the JSM100 is listed for $1303 + shipping.

There are probably some other Japan only models here, but I don't know the line well enough to identify them. There is a cool looking ATK bass for about $400.

Ok guys - here comes a long post. We've tried to put the E-Bay pricing up as a searchable database but without success so far.

The figures are up to and including July this year, in US Pesos or their equivalent at the time and cover a 9 month period.

John - feel free to move or copy these to the appropriate areas.

Just for clarity let me explain a couple of things:

1. These were only for items that sold.
2. I have left anything that looked misidentified in the listing or that is statistically well out of place.
3. Obviously averages on small samples with big variations are statistically useless - they have only been included for completeness.
4. I've sometimes struggled to identify models and have either left them out or made a judgement call - acoustics are no problem but I don't have the depth of knowledge that some here have on electrics.
5. The data is now almost 3 months old, I've started a new set and will try to post them a bit quicker this time - probably early January.

Cheers

I noticed you have an AM505 listed in the Artist Hollow Body section. If there is such a guitar, this is a new one on me. Do you have any images or more info on this one?

Sorry Sven I don't - and I should have kept the images as it wasn't one I was familiar with either - something to remember for future use I guess.

I would have thought it was a mistake but the guitars didn't match any AM model I have in any catalogue in terms of their feature combination and thus I listed them as an accurate representation.

Russ:

It's a fantastic job and tool. I've referred to several times, in some of my messages.

Unfortunately, my hosting company (Earthlink) says they don't support MySQL or PHP (this surprises me, considering how many sites have this capability). So, that puts a crimp in the plans to have as an updatable database that can be searched.

If there's any Internet-saavy person out there that can help find a way, please email me.

We could always just put them up as XML spreadhseets - these would be interactive at least and searchable - would only require a page or place where we could put them. I can convert them to that format easily enough.

Cheers

Russ,

For demo purposes only, I placed these into excel and loaded them as files into a yahoo group data file. When clicked on, they open in a spreadsheet. Is that what you were suggesting? The group I created I did for Roadstar stuff, but anything Ibanez of course is welcome. But you (and others) probably get the idea...

Of course this was done for example purposes only, and these are **your** files, so I will remove them unless you say otherwise.

Best,

Dennis

Hi Dennis
Feel free to use them - they were done for everyones benefit.
The original files are actually Excel - I just pasted them as tables to get the data up.

Cheers

Hi Russ,

Great, Thanks! Anyone who wants to report updates, I will also be happy to help keep the lists updated as well. I am working on a list for Roadstars right now using several online auction sites as price references. It too will be posted on the Yahoo group for the time being.

Best,
Dennis

Hi guys -
Below are the updated tables effective up to 31/3/04.

The additional column on the end is for the present average and I've left the old one for comparative purposes so that you can see in which direction the average has moved.

Now to remember how to post tables!!

Cheers

Great job, once again. This is a tremendous resource!

Can someone help out with the model number for the LP with half vine?

Yeah, good work, fantastic resource.
What's the score with the Iceman range?
Any guides on their prices now?

I'd be interested in stats for the AS120s.

I notice the white ones (1994 to 1996 I think) seem to sell for around $600-700 while the red ones go for anywhere from $400 to $550 used. Any info? Interested also in whether anyone has noticed a price difference between the AS120s with the rounded Epiphone looking headstocks vs the more squared ones that narrow at the top (pre 1996 I think).

Regarding the model number for the LP with half vine, I got this info emailed to me:

"Harry has a half vine LP pictured on his site he refers to as a 2660 BK."

Hope this helps fill in the hole.

Thanks for the half vine info John - I will update the table for the next run in 6 months or so.

Thanks for the positive feedback - makes the effort worthwhile.

One thing I have noted is the drop in clearance rates - in the first cut these were running at close to 65% sold at the first attempt and 84% by the 3rd attempt.
These have dropped this time to 53% and 62% and a bit of analysis reveals that the drop in sale percentages is almost entirely due to reserves that are set above the level the market will currently bear.

Cheers

Let's have a round of applause for Russell and the fine work that he's done (once again!)

There are some surprises: $1216 for the high on a PF350. I hope that it was mint! The acoustics look to be great deals, btw.

I notice that the GB10 and right below it, the 2470 L5 Copy have exactly the same $ figures. Is this a coincidence?

HOLY MOLEY!!! A Bob Weir sold for $3350!!! And eight were sold. For as few of those that were supposedly manufactured, that's a lot of them to sell in one year.
If they start selling in that upper range and higher, I'd sure be tempted to part with mine. I could get a lot of gear with $3500.
Did I REALLY type that??!?!!!? I better have my meds adjusted.
Thanks for the list. It'll be very helpful to all of us.

Congratulations Russell,
these price listings are truly amazing given the time required and meticuluos nature of this task.
Does anybody have any insight on the prices of the 2671 and the 2671s?I would have thought that the price of the 2671 would be greater than the 2671s which only offers the standard features.Any ideas ??

Have Benson's just jumped up in price, or is it just me? Russell's average from last year is $1200. The last few GB10s have gone for 1800-2000 on eBay.

One just got snapped up with a buy it now of 1700.

Another case of "should've bought it when it was cheap" :-)

I noticed the same price jumps on GB10's, but interestingly, some NEW ones are going for the price of smoe USED!!

This shop has one that has been on the shelf for about six months...and price dropped to $1,995!

There's a shop I know of, they've had a '79 IC400 Iceman in stock for between 5-6 years, and throughout that time, they've been asking £1500 for it! If it was a PS10, then maybe, but it's a standard, tidy, IC400 without much damage (but a fair bit of paying wear on the frets).

Mad.

Just bought this blonde AS-200 on that auction. Have a JSM-100 that replaces my sunburst '81 AS-200 that was stolen. I learned on this guitar and fell in love with it as a teenager...so I was heartbroken.

Always thought blondes were beautiful. Do they have more fun?

Great work, Russellw. It seems that the late '70s Artists are fetching more than the early '80s Artists. Perhaps it's because the '70s models were more innovative with the smooth heel and thinner body (before PRS) whereas the '80s models revert back to a more Gibson-like format (other than being double cut, that is).

Guitartim,

I'll review it as soon as it arrives...probably the 3rd or 4th. I absolutely love my Scofield, but there is something about the mature sound of an 80's AS-200 that just gets me. Can't wait!

Just curious: how current & thorough is the data? For example, the $2,500 AR500 is not there, nor is the $675 AM50 that I'm aware of....

Michael

As outlined in the post (and above as well) I wouldn't for one moment claim that the data is 100% thorough - firstly it's based on a predefined search, secondly it's reliant on me actually recognising the model (and I have stated that my knowledge isn't that great on the electrics)and thirdly I am sure I miss some. Currency wise it is current to the end of March.

Cheers

Yeah....but that's always the case: I wish I'd gathered a couple of Gibby LP Bursts in the sixties......or a handfull of '59 Flying V's when nobody wanted these........

Hey......I think I'll stock my over 100 piece Ibanez collection for the next 15 years at least. I won't have to worry about financial problems when I will be retired..
