On Feb. 9, 2002 I got to see three fantastic Jazz guitarists in concert. The crowd was probably around 500 persons. The venue was a local high school auditorium. The cost...$15.00 per person. The show was 2 hours long, with a 15 min. intermission. The guitarists were Jimmy Bruno, Howard Alden and Frank Vignola. They bill themselves as the "Guitar Collective." Talk about a low tech show. Three guys and three folding chairs. What more do you need? Well amps would be nice, right? There were no stacks of Marshalls to be seen. Howard played through a tiny Polytone amp (Mighty Brute 10, I think). Jimmy had a slender cabinet made by Razors Edge and some preamp do-hickey. Frank chose to mic his guitar and play acoustically. It's all about great guitars for Jazz players. Here's Jimmy's 7 string Benedetto. He left it sitting on the chair before show and proped up like this during intermission.

Here's Jimmy up close. Next we have Howard Alden. He was also playing a 7 string Benedetto, his had an oval sound hole. And Frank Vignola. Sorry, I'm not sure what make his guitar was.

I was in awe of how complicated the music was and how it all seemed so effortless for these guys. These guys smoked. They truly seemed to enjoy each other and everyone had a good time. They made it as casual and intimate as friends entertaining in their own home. And then they said good night.

Funkle: It was the most bang for the buck, I've ever gotten. John: Look at www.studywithfrank.com. They recorded a CD together in 96 or '97 for Concord records. Check out www.concordrecords.com Also look at www.jimmybruno.com I wasn't able to find a website for Howard Alden. |

Howard Alden has done a bunch of collaboration recordings with guitarist George Van Eps. Really good stuff. You can get most of them at emusic.com |

FYI, It appears that Howard Alden is playing through a MegaBrute (100 watts and one 8" speaker) and Jimmy Bruno is playing through an RE Twin8 Tower cab with a Clarus amp. Regards, Peter |
