Jerry: What do you mean "someone has got this site's email addresses"? |

It would appear that someone who frequents this site picked up a virus on their computer. The virus then potentially sent emails from that person's address book containing the virus. The person's address book must have had several of our email addresses in their address book. That would explain why several members of this site have received emails to that effect in the past 2 days. More than likely someone with a Microsoft Outlook address list. It could be coincidental, but I have never received a virus tainted email to my personal email until today. This only one day after spiro received a virus tainted email that had my email address included with others. I have Yahoo mail which scans for virus plus I dont even have spiro's address saved in my address book! You can only infect your computer if you open an attachment. The best thing to do is always check any attachments with an anti-virus program prior to opening, and NEVER open an attachment from an unknown sender. Has anyone heard in the news or at work of a widespread virus to the general email public in the last 2 days? |

Jerry: I was hoping that was what you meant. Rather than thinking there was a possibility that the info members give to activate accounts had somehow been stolen and was the source of these email viruses. While it's not an impossible thing to have happen, it would be highly improbable. I don't even have ready-access to the email addresses of every person here. BTW, the first email I received with an infected virus came from someone I didn't know and was addressed to account@ibanezcollectors.com. Because of the generic address, I figured it was from someone that was not familiar with myself or the site because they would have had my personal account. I wrote to the person about their being infected but have received no reply, as yet. I concur that a virus program that checks email is a must. And while you're at it, you could also stop using Outlook. I use Netscape. Not immune to receiving viruses, but not conducive to propagating them either. Certainly, consumers should beatup on MS for making their products such a security risk. But that's a rant for another type of forum. |
