I'd like some recommendations on amplifying my acoustics. Three are Ibanez and one is a Martin. There are magnetic sound hole pickups and piezos that attach to the top or under the saddle. etc. There's Fishman, Dean Markley, Barcus Berry and others. I'm lost! Anybody have any experiences and recommendations? How about installation? Can I do a piezo under the saddle myself or does it require a tech. Thanks, JohnS ICW |

John, A piezo under-saddle can be installed easily. However, they ALL require a preamp of some kind (in-board or out-board) as the output is very low. If you like the Ovation sound, go with a piezo. My personal preference is the Fishman Rare-Earth Pro: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=030126125204066167253151570437/search/g=home/detail/base_id/39274 Worth ever penny. Easy (non-destructive) installation. Sounds fantastic! Cheers Steve |

i used a martin thinline under the saddle of my vintage takamine and am very pleased with it. output is good and is not necessary to have a preamp or eq, but either of those add versatility. the installation requires removing the saddle which might result in breaking it, shaving it down to reduce the height gain due to the piezo, and drilling a hole through the tailpiece for the wire to go through. i enlarged my endpin so i could use a combo endpin jack/strap button. or you could add one of the lonestar ibanez to the fold that already has one installed :?) |

I'm another fan of the Fishmans under saddles - all of my acoustics (except one)have them and thus I use a single external Fishman EQ Pro pre-amp. The only damage caused is the installation of the combo end-pin jack which is why the other guitar hasn't been done. It was just too mint to do it too a vintage instrument. Cheers Russ |
