EBAY FRAUD ALERT !! READ THIS !!

I FELT THAT THIS WAS IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO POST AGAIN.
Please don't make the same mistake I did today.

I was trying to list a Fender Strat case today and could not get the auction started. After 3 or 4 tries, signed off, rebooted my computer and went to my email to write to Ebay for help.

I opened my mailbox to find a email from Ebay
(SO I THOUGHT) stating that I needed to update my account information.
I followed the link in the email to the site and filled out all of the "required" info.

As soon as I clicked on the "SUBMIT" buton, I had the same feeling you get when you slam the car door closed with your key in it....

How could I be so DUMB !!!

Please LOOK at this site address so you will not be fooled like I stupidly was today.
I'd rather be embarrased telling you guys that was a "victim" then to see someone else here fall prey to this scam.

Here is the address to watch out for:

http://hosting.vosn.net/%7Ealayman/images/

If you click on it , you may understand how I was duped. I ws still STUPID to give such personal information but I felt that since Ebay now owns Paypal, I had to provide info more than Ebay originally required of me.

Humbled Maniac
P.S. The Vintage Strat Case ended in under 5 hours. E-MAZING

Hi Maniac,

Check out this url http://www.vosn.net/ I think you should report the fake Ebay page to abuse@vosn.net Since the page is hosted on their servers they can trace the owner of these fake ebay pages.

Good luck!

Mike:

This is scary! Did you report the situation to your credit card company or bank?

Posted on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 11:44 pm:

Hi John,

I spent 4 1/2 hrs. reporting to every agency I could think of.
FTC,DOC,FBI,SSA,CID,OIG,All the credit bureaus,Ebay,Paypal,DMV,my banks,and a few I wont mention too.
I recieved responses within 24 hrs. from most of them.
ID theft, internet fraud and possible terrorist links get the attention of our agencys rather quickly these days !
The really scary thing is what may happen in the months and years to come.
What really pisses me off is that Ebay KNEW ABOUT IT PRIOR TO MY CONTACT and all they did was post a message on their seldom read bulletin board instead of making it their business to contact ALL account holders as a warning....
I guess they did not want to publicize info that may scare off bidders/sellers and cost them $$ in lost revenue.

The bottom line is, I WAS STUPID to give out so much info EVEN IF I thought it was Ebay and Paypal requesting it.

It takes a very big person to admit they screwed up. Most people in this country look for someone or something to blame instead of taking responsibility for their own acts.
Not only should you be commended for helping others from falling prey to the same mistakes you made, but more important, you set an example for how to stand up and be a man.

Raceboy, Johnm

Thank you for your comments.
It really does help to take some of the "sting" away from this to know that others can appreciate my attempt to prevent our Ibanez friends from falling for this scheme.
Imagine how many this could happen to that are Ebay account holders.
I heard somewhere that there are over 35 million Ebayers out there...Even if only 2% of them become victims, the numbers are staggering.

Best regards,
Mike G.

Just to add to the list,I just recieved a string of emails from ebay. The first one was confirming my password change(that I never asked for)and the rest were bid and auction cancelation notices due to my suspention from ebay because of a dead email. That email goes with the new password that now has me locked out of my own account. How someone got in and did this I'm not sure but I hope to find out.All of my auctions ended tonight so it was perfect timing to screw them all up.Plus if they could get in and do that,do they have access to banking info etc...???Pretty scary.

I registered for this discussion group specifically to chime in on this issue, and to thank Maniac for the original alert.

Two days ago, I received a request from eBay to update my credit card information. I don't have a credit card on file with eBay, as I joined long before that became a requirement... so I was immediately suspicious. After checking out eBay's "Community Message Board", I began searching the web for more info. Eventually, I ran across Maniac's posting. (This was lucky for me, as I happen to be an Ibanez RG/Jem nut anyhow! Up until now, all I'd ever seen was the Jemsite.)

What's most serious is that the credit card message I received had an eBay logo graphic AND a pretty convincing link to enter credit card info. eBay's discussion board has okay info on this, but it was Maniac's posting that alerted me to the real seriousness of the issue. eBay's response does indeed seem lackluster. I agree with Maniac: they should have sent an e-mail to warn all account holders. In over five years as a member, I think I've maybe looked twice at the message board.

Anyhow, if anyone else receives similar messages, be sure to forward them (including all headers) to spam@ebay.com

Next time I'll post something more significant about my Ibanez! :-)

Regards,
Spencer

I don't remember getting one of those fake pages.I've thought about it over and over.I saw the page Mike got and they do look real so it may have snuck by me but I don't think so.It's now 43 hours since it happened and no reply from ebay and I'm still locked out.I traced part of the password change request to a IP in Canada and the fraud team there is working on it.I was hoping ebay would have explained whats going on by now and how it may have happened.I guess time will tell.

JohnS,
The password change notice listed the IP address and ISP host that the request was made from.I ran that through the whois program at http://network-tools.com.That gives a lot of info I myself don't understand but also abuse links for the service that was used.I contacted them and they reacted fast. Two big thumbs down for ebay right now. It's not like I'm asking why my pictures won't load.Over 48 hours and no awnsers or access.

LETTER FROM eBay .......

Hello,

Thank you for writing regarding the email you received that appeared = to be from eBay.

Recently, our members have been receiving a variety of fraudulent =
emails that appear to be coming from eBay, PayPal, Half.com and even = Billpoint.

These emails may claim that you won a prize, earned an orange star, = ask you to "log in" to your account, "verify" your information, accuse you = of having a corrupted or frauded account and some even threaten suspension.
The emails are an attempt to harvest sensitive information = by coercing or scaring members into submitting information.

I must alert you to the fact that these emails do not originate from = us.
By tampering with the reply-to address for this email, it may appear = to have come from an eBay email address, when it actually did not. This
process is commonly referred to as "Spoofing".

Please remember that eBay will NEVER ask you for private information,
including credit card information or passwords, in an email. You will = always be directed back to the eBay site to enter information
.
More information about account security can be found at the following address: =
http://pages.ebay.com/help/account_protection.html?ssPageName=3DCMDV:AB0008

If you do need to update any of your information, the easiest and = safest way is through your "My eBay" pages. There is a link to your "My eBay" =
on the top of all eBay pages. Most links are located under the preferences or account tabs.

From now on you will need to be extra careful in determining if an = email is really from eBay. Please allow me to give you some pointers:

_ 1. All official eBay communication will have the "e" in lower = case and the "B" in upper case. This includes instances where eBay is used = at the start of a sentence.

_ 2. eBay will never ask you to "sign in" to your eBay account with = links provided inside of an email.

_ 3. We will never direct you to a site outside of eBay to enter information.

_ 4. We will NEVER ask for you social security number, pin number, mother's maiden name or password. We do not use this information for
eBay use. Please note however, that if you ID verify, they will = require some sensitive information, as well as setting up a seller's account = on eBay.

_ 5. If in doubt, first submit "bogus" information. If the form accepts it, then you know it's a fake site.

_ 6. eBay no longer gives out email addresses, but instead directs members to our webform. If you still have questions or concerns, = contact
eBay through our web form below. It is better to take the chance of being suspended than being the victim of identity theft.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-RS.html

You may also report future messages impersonating eBay to us by forwarding the message to spoof@ebay.com. When using this email = address
please make sure that you use the forward function of your email = program with spoof@ebay.com in the _to_ field. Please do not alter the = subject line, add text to your message, or forward the email as an attachment. =
We apologize for any confusion this message may have created for you = and we appreciate your efforts in helping keep eBay a safe trading place.

Regards,

Marion
