Hey, how did the rest of you make out in the blizzard? We got 20 inches in Central New Jersey. Because it was a holiday 90% of the people were at home or had received sufficient advanced warning. There were almost no major complications and things are relatively back to normal in this area (i.e., I'm at work :().

I know there's an international audience, maybe 20" seems trivial. If so, what's winter like in your area?

20"!! If we had 20" of snow here, me thinks we would all DIE!

We had couple of inches here in the UK in January and early February. Virtually brought the country to a standstill!

Presently, Essex is bathed in sunshine most days but it is a bit chilly at night with a ground frost in the morning.

As a nation who is completely preoccupied with the weather, we’re never ready for anything. Cold, heat, rain. sleet, snow, hail, even the occasional hurricane and tornado, you name we get it. We’re just never ready for it.

HAZARD WARNING!
Scot flying into Newark

My auntie (who is also my boss) is currently standing over my right shoulder. She’s just had a fit having spotted your post John.

She's flying into Newark on the 25th of Feb and requests that you break out the shovels and clear the runway before she lands.

I suggest you get on with it as she packs a mean Scottish punch and I would like to hang on to this job for a little while longer.

Six:

I have a friend who works at Newark airport. If I promise to get your aunt a clean runway, do you think she'd substitute "Scottish Scotch" for the "Scottish punch"? :)

About 6 inches on the ground west of Cleveland. Go east or south, though, and you're in for a foot.

Six, you might want to tell your auntie to bring some snow shoes. Think I saw some on Ebay...

Hey guys, we got 24 inches here in Philadelphia. It's going to be in the 40's (farenheit, that is) the next 3 days so we're going to all be swimming by Sat. FYI it was the in the top 10 of recorded snowfalls but way short of the 31 inches we got in 1996. Here's a snap out my front door! Be glad you're not here!

Funny you should mention scotch John because she’s quite the connoisseur of the old highland single malt. Then again I’ve never met a Jock who isn’t!

FACT - The Scottish accent isn’t exactly an accent but altogether the perfect Queens English spoken with a heavy intoxicated slur, (especially if you hail from Glasgow). Just think ‘Scotty’ from Star Trek and you’ll know exactly what I’m on about.

I suppose you’ve guessed that I’m at home now and Auntie is many miles away.

Hailing from the Highlands like she does Craig I think she has snow shoes already.

Anyway, I hope the weather clears up soon for you guys.

Here's one time when it doesn't do well to have a Mini Cooper. Thought you guys in G.B> would get a laugh from this one! Quick, where's my shovel!

M77:

Never seen snow like that here in my lifetime. I definitely wouldn't be going to work in the morning that's for sure.

Can't tell - is that an old Mini Cooper or a new 'BMW' Mini Cooper?

And that street could be anywhere in Lancashire. Must have been the same builder.

Six,
That's one of the new BMW ones. Very hot item here in the states at present. It's perfect for our little narrow side streets here in Philly. The narrow streets make it difficult for the trucks to plow them, though. But on the bright side , since you can't drive anywhere, the bars are still open or you can stay in, drink scotch and play guitar!

Monday was a nice extra day off until I had to shovel for 3 1/2 hours.
Today was more of that at the job and ended with a 5-7' wall of snow around my parking lot after the snow plow and front end loader were done.

Clearing the sidewalk around a 180' X 90' lot is no fun especially since the snow plows buried the sidewalks with an extra 3' of snow on top of the 2+ feet that was there already.

Maniac
I took pictures of my crew standing with shovels in hand in front of the wall of snow that was over their heads when we were done.

All 8 of our stores lost 2 days worth of business and laid out alot of money to the snow plows and our own employees just to get the place open for business.

One of my employees went to buy a snow blower and ended up spending $900.00 + tax for it.
The store sold 16 of them in 20 minutes....

To add insult to injury, the police were towing any cars that were parked on the street where the signs say "NO PARKING WHEN ROAD I SNOW COVERED"

As I heard one guy complain " There wasn't any snow when I parked it !"

mike..Sounds like a tough day..I took the day off , but have to make the trek to North Jersey tommorow am. I shoveled for 4 hours on Mon & 4 hours today just to get my car out of the 6' drift that completely covered it, only to have the plow deposit 2' of new snow in the path of my driveway ! Hope the traffic is light tommorow....

Dave,

I'll bet after 8 hrs of it you were relieved to be "done"...The extra 2' that the plows left for you is a real kick in the butt isn't it...

When you come to the "Garden State" where you get the pleasure of paying tolls for the extra traffic, watch out for the speed traps.

Here's a email I was sent from a friend recently.
A fellow Jerseyite who prefers to remain nameless!

I took a friend to court in Holmdel today and I found out some info to save everyone a speeding ticket.
Mile marker 116.6 on the Garden State Parkway (Holmdel) there is a stationary radar trap. Out of the 50 or so persons in court today, half were all there for speeding at that spot. I don't know
what direction it is but I figured I'd tell everyone. Pass this email on to everyone you know. The judge and prosecutor where actually laughing as they fined everyone $172 + $30 court costs = $202.

Happy Motoring !

Is that just one speed trap in the whole of America!

There are 13 fixed speed cameras in my small town alone. The UK police are not fussy where they put them either.

The British public can understand the use of speed cameras outside schools etc. but most of them are placed in areas where the risk of knocking someone over or having a vehicle/vehicle related accident is minimal.

So basically it's a multi million pound income generator for UK police forces who incidentally are required to manage their own budgets.

I'd suggest that as a nation, if you see more of these buggers going up, then start early and fight it all the way. It's too late for us.

From experience, the camera you mentioned above must be taking pictures of number plates from the rear and matching that with the registered owner. If I recall you guys have no front plate?

So if you are buying a used car, make sure the present owner hasn't got any outstanding tickets and ensure that you immediately register the car in your name when you buy it. Or when buying, give the present owner a bogus name and address and let him send that off to the authorities.

Check out this website to get an idea of the scale over here:

Happy motoring!

Mike..I've been passing that spot for over 15 years now as I make my daily treck to the "North forty"..I see them there EVERY DAY ! also at around 98, 104,& 107 (right after the bridge). I figure that I have passed these guys around 7000 times in the past 15 years and have only been nailed twice...85 in a 55 at the mile marker 117N, and 90 in a 55 at MM 98S. I think its cost me around $600 plus points-could have purchased a nice Artist for that much !

Mike and Dave:

I've been there, but never been stopped. But I'm not in the habit of doing 85-90...anymore. Paid my fines for 3 years and learned my lessons. :)

We go to WW/Cape May every Sept. Other than that, I might get to Sandy Hook or Pt. Pleasant to go fishing once or twice during the summer. Funny how you take the shore for granted. I bet people who live in the mid-west don't.

The Parkway is schitzo. South=fun, north=congestion. And thank goodness for EZPass! :)

Guys,

What a diverse world we live in! I have just spent the week in Broome, Western Australia on business. Broome is very remote, located on the northwest coast of Australia. It is in the tropics and the closest town is 5 hours drive away through red desert outback country.

The weather in Broome has been averaging 35 degrees celcius (approx 90 fahrenheit), with 90% humidity. I can try to describe it in words but nothing can prepare you for the hot wet blast of air that hits you the minute you step off the plane. The humidity is such that when you jump out of your air-conditioned car, your sunglasses immediately fog up and you pop sweat all over your body in an instant. Now this weather guys, is what you can expect right through summer, but it is hotter in December/January. Usually high 30's/low '40's with 90% humidity.

You cannot find a more polar opposite of what you Americans have been experiencing I'm sure!

Broome has a local population of about 12,000 and is the epicentre of the world's pearling industry. I had a great time and it was a successful trip.

Cheers,

Mark

Cleveland got slammed again this past weekend, this time worse than before. I think my neighbors thought I was nuts buying a monster 8-hp Ariens snowblower a couple years back. Now, they're just jealous.

Ah, how I miss the NJ winters. NOT! I'm digging Phoenix right now. I got sunburned on Saturday, or was it saturburned on Sunday...?

Challenger,

Let's see how you feel about Phoenix in another 4-5 months....Make sure your air conditioners are in good working order in the cars and the home.

I had a plastic molded Fender case melt in the car while visiting the Tempe area in 1998. It was in the car for about 3 hours.

In the meantime, I wish I was there right now :)

Yes Mike,

Lotsa stuff gets melted in cars in Australia including Fender cases. The funniest thing to see though is when someone has tried to economise on their car hi-fi, and has installed detachable ghetto blaster speakers in the rear parcel shelf. One hot day and they turn into melted lumps!! That always makes me laugh.

Cheers,

Mark

Yeah, I know it can get nasty. We'll have to see. I just got real tired of all the damn staying in the house for six months at a time and only coming out to shovel or get mail. And that's when I DID feel like going out.
I have a friend here who says she's tired of the weather - that it's too consistent. As if that were a bad thing...
Oh yeah - I just picked up a Roadstar 540P in Magenta - the guitar I've always wanted, and now it's mine.
I RULE!
