The mention of "blues jams" in the topic by Paddy F has me thinking this might be an interesting topic...anyone else on this board visit/frequent/play at any good local blues sessions? I'm thinking of the NYC area in particular, but any other ones would be good to know about...

Have hit a handful of them so far and the most notable in my area was the Sat afternoon one over at Scotland Yard Bar in Hoboken, NJ. Seemed to be a pretty healthy scene, the turnout was decent, and the renditions were "historically correct", with a definite lean towards Chicago.

I've been getting into a lot of the blues primitivists recently, like the guys over on Fat Possum Records, and T-Model Ford in particular. Also saw the Black Keys last month and thought they put on a great show.

...well luckily this topic hasn't taken off so fast that a follow-up note is buried a couple PgDns away , just should have mentioned in the original that this place is more bar than music club (meaning space can be tight), so don't bump into the band on the way in!

Fred:

I know the blues is in my blood, it just doesn't come out of my finger tips as fast and furious as I'd like. Hence visiting a "blues jam" would be cool, but playing at one would be ultra embarassing. :)

Being a New Nerseyite, I was very interested in the Scotland Yard and took a look aroung their website. The list of "regulars" was pretty impressive. Weird, I was just reading about Arthur Neilson in Vintage Guitar 2 days before.

Tell me about what you've seen and heard.

Hi John,

Not many interesting "war stories" to share (at least not yet, that is)...mostly just trolling venues looking for good places, was interested in getting a line on decent places in Manhattan to hit. The thing that struck me about the Scotland Yard place was that most of the players there (on the times I've gone) could have easily stepped into pro situations, like might been seen over at Stanhope House or some of the clubs in NYC. (Speaking of Stanhope, just saw Tinsley Ellis there last night, smokin' show in blues parlance as it goes...enough to cough up the $16 for his new CD too)
