Hello! I'm pretty new to working with photos, and I 've read the formatting section here, and am ashamed to say I DON'T GET IT. Please help! :-) I have digital photos of my guitar on my harddrive, they are about 380kb each. I know I have to shrink them down a lot more, but once I do, how do I upload them? I've read about the tag, but I can't even figure out the upload part! As I said, very new to that. . any help is GREATLY appreciated! IRIE, JPB |

JPB: The whole picture uploading process isn't that complicated. Just break it down into several steps, get used to each one (trial and error is the only way to go), and the result will be success! Step 1 is taking the pictures and getting them on your hard drive (or some kind of device that your computer recognizes as a drive letter). Sounds like you've got that down. Step 2 is making the images small enough to be accepted by the Discussion Board software. The 50k size is an arbitrary limit that I set to help conserve disk space on the website. The only thing you need is a program that will resample or compress your digital picture files. These programs are typically called "bitmap editors". If you don't have one, just say so and I'll try to point you to something cheap and easy. Step 3 is writing your message and including the special tag. The tag tells the Discussion Board software to stop and pick up a file, that is strored on your computer, and upload it along with the text. It may not seeem so, but this really is the simplest of all 3 steps. The simplest form of the image tag is: \image{my picture} put this in the body of your message wherever you want the picture to appear. NOTE: you can put anything you like between the curly braces to remind you what image you intend to go in this spot (remember, you can put multiple images in a message, you need someway to keep track of them). This info is NOT used in anyway to locate your image. When your done with our message, press the Preview/Post Message button, as usual. You'll get to proofread your message. However, you'll only see a placeholder image like this: where your picture is suposed to be. Don't worry, everything is working just fine. When you press the Post this Message button you'll get a new screen called the Image/Attachment Upload Form. This will have a textbox (or one for each image you included in your message) to enter the location of the picture on your computer. Press the Browse... button and then use the Upload File dialog box to navigate to the drive and folder where you image is, select the image file and press OK. You should be back at the Image/Attachment Upload Form and the textbox will contain the path to the image file. Press the Upload button and your message will be processed including sending the image along. That's it. Just remember: keep files under 50k (using JPG files with a med. to large amount of compression will help), spell the image tag properly (curly braces, not parens or brackets) and you should be ok. Let me know if you have any more questions or problems. JohnS ICW |

Like this? Thanks for the directions, John. I didn't want to fill the site up with a bunch of errors. I'm going to finish reading your instructions now and try this thing. As a friend of mine said teaching me how to surf, "Hurry up and start suckin' at it. It's the only way you get better." IRIE, JPB |

John: COOL. Thanks a bunch, brother. This is the guitar that has me hooked on old Ibanez now! I picked it up in Future Music, Sunset Boulevard, LA, CA. I'd been browsing old SG's, trying to make a change from Strat style guitars. I walked in with an old friend I was visiting there, a guy I'd sold his first guitar to. I walked in and flipped. All I could was snap my fingers a couple of times, point dumbly and say, "Dude--THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR! THAT ROCKS!" Little did I know how true those words were. I asked the guy behind the counter if I could try it out, explaining I never see these in Virginia. He nonchalantly informed me that he sees them all the time. I plugged it into some 15" combo amp. Clean was Memphis Soul, dirty was Humble Pie to sky's the limit. I fell in love, and grinned my way down to 7-11 to put it on layaway. There she is--The Jessica B. The name is written on the case handle, so I gave it to the axe. Thanks for your part in running this forum. I'm meeting all sorts of folks who love these axes as much as I do! IRIE, JPB |

JPB: It looks like you've got the hang of it. Now everytime someone asks "how do you upload pictures?" you have to answer them. That's a real nice looking Cherry Sunburst CN200, you've got. What year is it? I suppose you've already done a keyword search on "CN200" and "Concert". If so, you know that there are many (re)discovering this short-lived series. I guess the guitar world wasn't ready for a premium, LP-like guitar with a bolt-neck. If you can, I'd suggest trying to get a hold of the 1978 Ibanez Electric Guitar catalog. They are actually very common and come up on ebay, often. It does a great job of showcasing the Concert series and gives you a glimpse of the top of the line CN250...everybody loves a vine!. For me, this catalog is a perfect snapshot of the company in it's full-speed ahead transition from a cheap replica maker to a manufacturer of innovative and original designs. There's something for everybody in that year's catalog. |

John: Yeppers, it's a 1978 Ibanez CN-200, serial #H780891 or something--it's upstairs! :-) I'll definitely try to get my hands on the catalog. I saw a beautiful Antique Violin CN-200 and a really nice 250 awhile back! The partial vine is nice, but full vines seem worth the wait! I'm really falling in love with old Artists and am talking to a guy with a doubleneck right now. Yikes! I'm also trying to save money, so we'll see where I wind up. Thanks again for all of your candor and input. The website's a joy, and the community seems very helpful. IRIE, JPB |

I have uploaded a new version of the Image Upload FAQ page. Please let me know if this is clearer. It also contains a step-by-step tutorial for using the Faststone Image Viewer program to Crop, Resize and Save As a compressed JPEG file, to make images more efficient to upload in Discussion Board messages. Here's the link: http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/FAQMain.html |

Jazzzbo, you have to write down that text line manually in the editor box, there's no button to insert it automatically. |

Of course you need some special characters then which are only accessible in combination with the ALT GR key on your keyboard like { } and \. You could copy & paste that necessary text line from the FAQ, too, if you don't want to type it yourself. |

Jazzzbo: How many "boxes" do you see? The FAQ states: The formatting tag you need to add to your message is the following: \image{Text description} You need to use a separate "image" tag for each picture you want to include. So, if you want to upload three images, your message might look something like this: \image{guitarfront} \image{guitarback} \image{guitarheadstock} Place the "image" tags in the body of your message, wherever you want the picture to appear. ***************** Are you seeing some other "boxes" where you can enter message content? There is an eBay Enter Item number: texbox. That's only for inserting an ICW-friendly eBay Link in your message. You do this by copying the eBay item number from the eBay auction page, pasting it into the Enter Item number: textbox, and pressing the Add Ebay! button. The link will be added to the end of your message. Go the Account Holders Test Area section and try both features out. |

Jazzzbo: Oh, you're on a MAC! That's a lot easier. All you have to do is "wish" that you want the pictures uploaded and it will happen automatically. Just pulling all you MACers legs, a little. I have two MACs and have no problems with uploading pictures. Funkle is also MACified and doesn't seem to have any problems. Can you be more specific about "nothing happens" when you hit the POST button? From your test message, it appears that "something" must be happening. I'll try using Safari and see if anything is amiss. Have you tried another web browser? I regularly use FireFox for MAC, so I know that works, too. If your image is indeed small enough (50k bytes), and in the correct file format (JPEG or GIF...not TIF or BMP or RAW or...) then the only other time I've seen an image fail to upload is when the JPEG was saved in CMYK mode. It needs to be in RGB mode or the upload will fail and all you'll see is the placeholder graphic. What software are you using to resize and resave image files? |

Jazzbo, after hitting post when "nothing happens" do you see your post text? also do you see boxes (or box) that says "your image here"? What tripped me up at first and what I have seen trip up a couple more people is that you are not asked to actually upload the pictures until the VERY END of the posting process. So when you initially compose your message with text and the image formatting, you need to hit the "Preview/Post" message button, this does not yet bring you to where you upload the images. At this point you should see your text as well as the "Your image here" placeholder. If this is what you see you are on the right track. Then click the "Post Message" button. This will now give you the browse option for each image place holder you added to your post, once you set the paths to the images from your computer for each image (again, most easily accomplished by using the browse button), click the upload button, and you are done. If you have done all this and the image does not show but the image placeholder does, this means you have done everything properly and that your image size (in kb's) is too large.Pictures must be under 100k. On a Mac the easiest way to determine the size of an image is to highlight the image, then on the keyboard simutaneously press the command(aka "apple" key) and the "I" key. This is called "get info" and will show you the properties of your image, including size in kb's. Remember size must be under 100k. To explain resizing will make this long and poorly written instruction even longer and more poorly written ;-) so i will just say do a google search on photo resizing on a mac. It is much easier than I make it sound |

Jazzzbo: OK, I tried the Upload process in Safari and FireFox MAC. There is a difference with Safari. Here's the ammended instruction: When you press the Post this Message button you'll get a new screen called the Image/Attachment Upload Form. This will contain a "Choose File" button for each image tag (and placeholder graphic) included in your message. Press the "Choose File" button and then use the dialog box to navigate to the drive and folder where you image is located, select the image file and press OK. You should be back at the Image/Attachment Upload Form and the area next to the button will contain the path to the image file. When you have finished choosing your images files, press the Upload button and your message will be processed including sending the image(s) along. ************** If you use FireFox MAC, the original instructions are fine. |
