Hi everyone, I don't know if you guys remember, but I posted a while back about what guitar Daryl Stuermer used during the 'Duke' era tour with Genesis. Well, I sent him an email from his website and he responded the next day. It turns out he used a Suntech guitar and he was quite fond of it. He also went on to tell me how he used it for Phil Collins solo record 'Face Value' for the distorted guitar sound on 'In The Air Tonight'. What a cool guy Daryl is to take the time and answer my question. I give him mad props for that. Here's some pics I found on an Alembic forum of the model of Suntech he used. Patrick |

Very cool! I always think of the vignette with Crocket and Tubbs from the premiere episode of the Miami Vice television series when I hear In The Air Tonight. 20 years later, I still get chills. Incredible sound. |

Could it just be the name for their guitars in another market? Kind of like Electa and Ibanez? Patrick |

Well, whatever it's called, it was built by Maya/Rokkomann, & it's very likely, like Fujigen Gakki, they sold & rebranded the designs for a variety of customers. Electa's an Australian brand, isn't it? Isn't it likely that they were stock designs from the same factory as Ibanez, ordered by an Australian importer? Just the same thing was the case with Ibanez & Antoria in the UK, which leads plenty of people to think that Antoria was the UK name for Ibanez. Anyway, these El Maya Strats (and a gorgeous P-Bass the same) do come up from time to time, as well as some original designs with the same construction. It might be easier to get hold of an El Maya version, if you're after one. J. |
