Ebay Item #260104735146 The description says so, and Memphis is mentioned in this forum's description. But is it an Ibanez make? Or made in the same factory? Thanks. |

Since posting I've dug up a few older posts and now understand that "Ibanez" is just a brand name used by Hoshino. What is not as clear is whether Memphis guitars (in the 1970's) came out of the same factory(ies) as the Ibanez "law suit" guitars. Some say yes, some say no. I'm leaning to the "no" side right now. |

Chuckee....I don't think Memphis is a Hoshino product, although I do believe that Memphis guitars came from several factories. The quality, especially pre 1976 is very low end (Plywood bodies, real cheap hardware, Dovetail joints in the headstock, etc). Conversely, the post 1976 (Egyptian series) guitars display amazing quality totally unlike the earlier models. I have an Artist double cut that is of a very high quality build-very close to the '76-'79 era Ibanez, except for that ugly scarf joint in the neck (like most of the modern Koren and Chinese guitars). The Pups are Gotoh as is the rest of the hardware, the neck has an extra long tenon that extends behind the neck pickup-very cool guitar. I also have a neck thru that is modeled after a Travis Bean super quality too. Finally remember the Memphis Custom Agent ? Both Manic Mike and I sold ours to the same guy...it was basically a custom agent with no applicae on the body but with the mandolin headstock and the fancy neck inlays. Anyway there is not a lot of info on Memphis-I have a '76 catalog-but the quality seems to run the gambit |

Thanks, Dave. Great information. I'm going to pass on the Memphis, even though it looks just like a '76 CBS strat. Here's another question for you all, my brother just called and said he found a "Howard" brand guitar at my parents' house. Looks like a hollow-body Les Paul, he says (with F holes) so maybe it's more of an archtop electric. That's the only name on the guitar. Again, nothing on the internet except vague references to it being a Harmony brand guitar. Any ideas? |
