Meter for Measuring Pickup Output

I see pictures where the meter poles are held to the two "live" wires from the pickup. I've seen multiple-use meters in the hardware store, but have no idea which one I need. Oscilloscope, because pickup output is alternating current, AC. But you probably mean something else like pickup's resistance? Then a decent multi-meter will do.
