What kind of meter do I need to measure pickup output? I see pictures where the meter poles are held to the two "live" wires from the pickup. I've seen multiple-use meters in the hardware store, but have no idea which one I need. This would also let me know if a pickup works at all, correct? Thanks for any help.

Pickup output?
Oscilloscope, because pickup output is alternating current, AC.
But you probably mean something else like pickup's resistance? Then a decent multi-meter will do.

Ginger will give you long and detailed explanation.
