My tuning piece fell out of the tuner enclosure. It went right back in and tuned up ok. Is there an adjustment I can do to fix this ?

The tuner is an original on an AR500 from 1981.

From this picture of you beautiful AR500 I cannot see what you mean by "My tuning piece fell out of the tuner enclosure".

What is important, is that you could put it back and that it is functional. But I understand that you see a risk that it might fall out again. Just don't take this guitar out on gigs and leave it at home, so that you can't loose the piece.
Do NOT replace the tuner by a different one that would impel you to drill a non original hole in the headstock, which would mean a value decrease.
Leave this one on the guitar and play this guitar at home only, so that you have time to look for a good replacement (if necessary).

If we can see the actual problem, we can perhaps be of assistance to get the original part into shape again. With simple open tuners that's much easier of course. I recently got a few of them (of a friend's Aria J-200 replica still with a lawsuit headstock, which Aria replaced after Hoshino's legal problems with Norlin in order to avoid all that) in shape again, just with some small pliers.
Now these better modern closed oil bath tuners are of course more difficult because you can't see what's inside.

Just keep it as original as possible.

I'm having the exact same issue with my recently acquired AR305 ('82). Just pull the tuning peg and the whole shaft slides out of the casing, including the threaded part which drives the gear - sound the same?

I don't think it's all that uncommon on some of the late 70's Ibanezes, for the back of the peg housing to become loose and fall off, exposing the gears.

This happened to my 2619. As long as there is tension on the peg (i.e. a tuned string), the assembly will stay together. I've found that the only time the mechanism could fall out altogether is when changing strings. At that time there is a possibility that the assembly will fall out through the back, as there is no tension on the peg.

Flatbag,

That is exactly what's happening. Is this a sealed tuner or can I open it up and adjust something to keep it in ??

Thanks.

Sorry Heartfielder, I have no idea how to fix it. I've just had a close look at mine, and can't see any reason for it to fall out, all surfaces seem smooth and clean, both on the shaft and inside the housing.

On the upside, I did realise something of a positive: when you pull the peg and shaft out of the housing, it causes the gear (and consequently the string post) to turn in the same direction as tuning the string upwards. This means when the string is tuned up to pitch, the tension almost completely prohibits the tuner from being pulled out (let alone accidentally falling out).

Gemberbier and anyone else wondering what Heartfielder and I are on about, here's some photographic evidence:

As an aside here, if anyone knows where I can get the thingy that goes on the back of the tuner I would be eternally grateful!

Emckenrick:

Your picture problem is intriguing me. I don't understand how a 58x44 pixel jpeg file can be 99k. I can get an 600x800 pixel image of an entire guitar down to 80k with no problem.

What program are you using to process your images?
