I would say Frank Zappa has been the impetius & greatly influential in my guitar playing.I remember the first time i heard one of his albums(those blacks discs w/ a hole in the middle)I can still remember clear as day, it was Overnight Sensation.Just looking at the cover,i was like W.T.H. is this dude about! Then songs like Yellow Snow, St. Alfonso pancake breakfast lmao , i was hooked.I can honestly say i dont have all his albums but i had enough of his collection to make me one of his biggest fans!I remember one strange influence that Zappa had- not only on me but my little sister(at the time)I use to play his albums so much that she started picking up certain phrases from the lyrics- and sing them through out the house.Mom and Dad was like whats wrong w/ that girl and why is she singing those very odd songs.Of course you know who they pointed to when anyone did anything weird (me of course)So yeah i would have to say F.Z. will always be a huge part of my eclectic musical background.I just wish he could have stuck around longer!

Dave I just paged through a book and they have him listed in NY 11/01/81 for the Halloween show and in Philly 11/03/81 only it says the Palladium for NY for that year. but every other year listed he was there from the 30 to the 1st except 1979 when he didn't tour because of sessions for Joe's Garage at the Muffin Utility Research Kitchen. I wish I would have seen the Haloween shows but hey I was only a day or 2 away.

Girl you thought he was a man but he was a muffin'
No cries is heard in the night as a result of him stuffin'

I had the great honor to see Zappa at the Palladium in 80/81, and all tolled, saw him about 8 times between 80 and 88 (his last US tour). What a master. My favorite solo of his is the whole-tone madness of Rat Tomago (Sheik Yerbouti), though anything he's done is unique and fantastic. I could go on for days.

Here's my brush with greatness for Frank: I had a roommate at the University of Bridgeport in 1980, Paul Nelson, who actually roomed with Steve Vai at Berkeley. When Paule found out Vai was in Zappa's band in 1980, he went down to the Palladium show and actually got back stage with Steve.

Oh, and I just saw "Zappa Plays Zappa" (Dweezil and his band, with Steve Vai featured on a few songs) in Seattle this past winter. It was surprisingly awesome.

Dave I seen him in 76 I that was that the one where he did the poodle lecture. I remeber this stuffed poodle he was holding and him giving this talk about the dog as an intro to Dirty Love.

Chuck I remember learning that solo. What a that was by ear but I conquered it pretty good!

Somewhere I have the transcription of the Rat Tomago solo, in a book of solos Zappa published (most of them transcribed by Steve Vai). I don't read music, but I used to love following along with the beat. If you can play that solo, I salute you. I've been able to adopt some wholetone and diminished scales to my playing, which I enjoy, but that's about it.

I believe that that is where the shows were (it was 30 years and a ton of mind altering substances ago !)..its called the theather at the Garden now...Back in the late 70's it was one of the venues that most of the rock acts were .Like Hot Tuna, Johnny Winter, Mahogany Rush (Frank Marino)...

There ain't enough superlatives in the language to cover Frank and his music. Even though he probably wouldn't like to hear this... the man is/was a God. It's Frank's world... we're just passing through.

At the Seattle ZPZ show last Winter, they announced they were filming for a DVD, but I haven't seen any indication on Zappa.com that it's available. If it ever does come out, look for me in the 14th row, dead center. I'll be the big bald guy jumping up and down and clapping next to the terminally embarrassed 14-year-old boy. ;-)

Just found this pic of a Frank Zappa exhibit. This is Mike Gibbons drummer for Badfinger holding a Rex Bogue with Zappa's signature on the control plate with all those knobs. Kinda reminds me of a 2681.

Check the Free Classifieds section if you are interested in purchasing a couple of old Frank Zappa ticket stubs from his final US tour of 1988.
