Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Buchanan I had two of Roy's albums in the '70's, "Loading Zone" (with his version of "Green Onions" featuring Steve Kropper on 2nd lead) and "You're Not Alone", which had a fantastic version of Neil Young's "Down By the River" on it. When I switched over to guitar from bass circa 1976, and wanted to teach myself how to play leads, I would put "You're Not Alone" on the turntable and play along to every song on both sides of the LP, then start over again on side 1. I would do that for hours. In a way, Roy taught me to play leads. It was a dang shame when I heard on the radio, in 1988, that he had hung himself in jail after being arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct. I saw Roy just once, at a theatre in Stamford, Connecticut, sometime around 1978 or 1979. While the opening act had a full stage setup (including a wall of amps), after they were done they cleared the stage, then set up a small drum kit, brought out a single bass amp, and then a single Fender Twin, which they tilted back on its braces and then put a mic to. That was it for Roy's setup. People in the balcony brought banners that read, "Roy is God." -Chuck |

Thanks Chucke. That was a good read. I always felt he never got the recognition he deserved. A real shame that we lost him before the Country Rock boom in the late 80's early/mid 90's. Can you imagine how many records he would have played on. six |
