One of the harder working guitarists in rock and roll. I was a big Rush fan in the 1970's. Imagine "discovering" them when "Caress of Steel" was released (and seeing them on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, playing "Bastille Day"), then having "2112" released (to this day, one of my favorite albums) and then on to their first live album, then the literally GROUNDBREAKING work of "A Farewell to Kings", "Hemispheres" and on and on. Lifeson grew with every new release, pushing his dexterity, pushing his use of alternative time signatures, pushing his use of chord structures. Again, never THE BEST rock guitarist, but always, always ONE of the best.

Favorite solo? Hands down, the "suicide" solo in "2112" (okay, maybe EVERY solo in "2112"). He's the reason, by the way, I went to Brian Guitars in New Haven, circa 1978, looking for an ES-335, but then leaving the store with a 2630 instead.

Alex was my first hero.

He is very underrated, but listening from counterparts on, he seems to have given up maintenance on his chops, live he really butchers the solos.

Just downloaded some Rush songs off of "Farewell to Kings" and "Hemispheres" tonight (feeling nostalgic for my youth) and the solo in La Villa Strangiato just played. One of Lifeson's best. Of course, listening to the entirety of "Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres" it struck me as kind of silly. But then, Rush always did overreach. Along the way, they came up with things like "2112" and "La Villa".
