I figured he deserves some recognition as being one of the most influential jazz guitarists in the last 30 years. His use of guitar synthesizers in the 80's up to today is incredible. Pat Metheny and Andy Summers got me interested in the Roland GR gear of the late 70's to mid 80's and I found out why they're so great. He's also a workaholic still performing every year and favors Ibanez guitars to boot.
If you want to hear Pat using some great Roland gear then give 'Offramp' a listen. It's my favorite and it just has a feelgood vibe throughout the entire record.

pat created his signature synth sound and keeps using it to great effect in the last 25 years.
i saw him playing offramp back in '85 with a roland guitar that seemed a jukebox, full of lights and hundreds of knobs (not the one in the photo above).
i like the way he builds a climax by changing the octave at the middle of a solo and keeping the notes going up to almost 6 octaves ("are you going with me?")...
that's another achievement of our "old" pat.
let's not forget that roland guitars were made by ibanez (as far as i know).

That's pretty cool Petruz. I believe this is the guitar you're talking about. I believe this was used to hook up to his Synclavier to get even more sounds. I prefer just the standard G-303 personally, but I bet it would be fun to mess around with that one.

The Roland guitars were made by Ibanez and Greco. Some believe the GR stands for Greco/Roland. Not sure on that one though. They're awesome guitars nonetheless and I'm glad to have a few.

Roland makes some good stuff, i played around with the vg-88 synth board and its A-OK. I had it hooked up to my Gibson unfortunaltey im gonna have to sell it cause i wont be mounting it on the 2670. IM gonna get a GT-8..

What early fusion album do you guys recommend from pat that will blow me away?

I would recommend 'Offramp', As Witchita Falls So Falls Witchita Falls', 'Travels (an awesome Live album)', '80/81', and really anything while he was on the ECM label. I tend to like all of his stuff.

i think offramp (1982) is a breakthrough album where pat left away his "garage" years and got definitely mature.
1984's "rejoicing" (in trio with charlie haden and billy higgins) is a true masterpiece that spans from cool acoustic to wild free jazz.
in 1985 "first circle" was released. a milestone album that set new paths to the pat metheny group - paths that they continue to explore until now.
personally i like much metheny's pure jazz guitarist side, that can be heard in his trio works like "question and answer", "trio 99->00" and others.

I saw him perform 'Question and Answer' when I saw him in Pittsburgh two years ago. It was absolutely amazing.

First Circle is definitely a difficult record to take in if you haven't heard much Metheny before. I'd recommend 'James' off of 'Offramp' if you want some real feelgood jazz. It always makes me think of the fall season when I listen to that song.

I got a chance to see Pat at a tiny club in boston (again early 80's). After the show Pat came to the bar and answered questions and sat and talked with us for quite a while. One off the nicest people i have ever met.

Ive always had a place in my heart for Bright Size Life. Its his first album and a good starting point. Plus Bob Moses and Jaco Pastorius are the rythm section.;}

I've seen Pat live 3 times in the last few years. Two times it was the "Group", once was the "Trio". I was in the first row, twice. The guy is awesome.

I keep these CDs in rotation in my car:

Still Life (Talking)
Speaking of Now
The Way Up
We Live Here

If you've never seen him perform, check out this DVD: Imaginary Day Live

I just saw Pat Metheny tonight in Buffalo. He put on a great show and he used an Ibanez and his Roland G-303 for most of the night. He wasn't playing his signature model, but it looked like a natural version of a JP-20. What a great show and here's a blurry pic from where I was sitting.

I got to meet him after the show as well and got him to sign 'Offramp' LP. I didn't get to talk to him though, because he wanted to go straight to his van as it was freezing cold outside. He was a nice guy and he was kind enough to sign the record and let me get a pic with him and a couple other people. I'm the guy with the hood on the right.

I like a lot his trio works(have all trio cd's), and saw him live with the 99->00 trio. The ECM period it's also fresh and beautifull, the late "group" stuff(compositions) it's too light IMHO.
