Hello Jeff,

I have sort of an odd request which I was hoping you could help me out with. I purchased a NOS Ibanez Super 70 single coil P-90 type pickup recently and I'm trying to fit it into my USA made
Hamer Special. I'm assuming the pickup was made sometime in the 1970's and is a model# 2337-70.

The pickup must have been made for a Les Paul (or carved top) type guitar because in between the pickup magnets and the base plate are two
wooden spacers, which are 70mm long and 6mm thick. In order to make this pickup fit in my guitar, I had to remove the spacers. Now the screws, which hold the base plate to the pickup, are too long. The screws are ~17.25 mm long (not counting the head) and 3 mm around the threads. The threads are ~0.55mm high and there are 10 threads/cm.

Is there any chance that you would know where I can find the appropriate shorter screws like this? I know that some of the newer Ibanez guitars feature P-90 style pickups as I remember the Talman model guitars a few years back having them.

Also, do you recall what Ibanez model guitars came with these P-90's. I recall seeing Les Paul Jr. and Special copies, but they had the dog ear P-90's and would not have the spacers since they were flat top guitars. Did Ibanez make a '53-'56 Les Paul copy? Any help you can provide me in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Just for the record, I own seven Ibanez guitars!

Best regards,

Vic-
Regarding the screws, I'd probably just chop 'em down to the correct length. I use a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel. You can dress the cut end of the threads a little with the cut-off wheel as well. If possible, put a nut on the screw so that it's "inside" of the cut. After you're done cutting and dressing, back the nut off the screw. This will clean up the threads, kind of like a poor-man's die.

I don't think we made a carved-top Les Paul with P-90s. We made a TV model (kind of like your Hamer) that we called the FM Jr. We might have also made an SG-type and "forward" body Firebird (our Firebrand) with soapbars.

I have a Duncan p-90 in the fingerboard position on a parts tele that I made a few years ago. Killer slide guitar.

Good luck.

Jeff,

Thanks for the info! I decided to save the screws thinking that one day I may buy a P-90 guitar with an carved top (read Hamer Korina Artist!). I'm currently in the process of picking up a pair of dog eared P-90's out of a Japanese LP Special copy from the 70's. I'm hoping the shorter screws from these pickups will fit the Super 70 P-90.

I'm with ya on the Duncan P-90 Jeff. I have one in my Hamer and I love it. It's great to hear you're still playing guitar. The bug never really leaves the system does it?!

Take care and thanks again.

Regards,

Vic

The vintage ibanez site www.vintageibanez.com has pics of a les paul "special"... black with two black p-90's in it. Sweet guitar, I've been after one for years now! Haven't seen one for sure and don't know that they do exist... but that picture is pretty convinceing to me! I've got my p-90 still sitting in my modest parts bin waiting for something to drop it in. It, however, has no spacers, and it seems to be made for a LP jr. model. It, however is not a dog ear pickup, but rather a direct screw into the bracket pickup. Anyone know where to pick up just the bracket? It'd be nice to have one on hand if I needed it.

Re the black Les Paul above - I've just aquired a black Les Paul 1975 with P90 pickups - so they do exist - I'll get a picture onto my site asap http://vic77.tripod.com
A question about the pickups - since I'm most used to humbuckers from my Jackson and Flying v - why were they used - I'd always thought that a Les Paul had to have humbuckers to get the Les Paul sound - so why put singles in there??
Please let me know your thoughts on that.

Alleycat,

What's the "Les Paul Sound"? I not aware of any rules regarding the sound of a guitar being dictated by its appearance. It's all about variety, man!

P-90's offer a biting, edgy tone some where between a single-coil and a humbucker. The original Gibson Les Pauls came with P-90's. The PAF humbucker didn't show up until about 1957.

Cheers

Guys,

Did IBANEZ ever make a LES PAUL copy having P90 pickups with ALNICO MAGNETS?

gibsonP90

Many many years ago I remember seeing a guy play a black Custom Agent with P90s like those on a 1957 Gibson LES PAUL CUSTOM. Needless to say the guitar did not come STOCK with the Alnico P90s but it sure should have!
