Yes, I have been remiss in visiting The Black Hole, but my busy-ness has been matched only by my irresponsibility. I had a pretty vicious motorcycle accident in early September (a geezer in a Rocket 88 tried to put me into orbit), but I escaped serious injury. A fully-functioning right wrist is but a memory, but I can still play guitar (had to sit out for about 6 weeks without playing – pure torture). I’m very much on the mend and should be back on two wheels by spring. I was going through The Hole and read the Gibson Logo thread. How I would have loved to put Gibson logos on a few ringers. Norlin, who owned Gibson at the time, were so incompetent on their own that they probably would’ve taken them back for credit. Believe me, the temptation was always there, but we never acted on it. We were pussies. As you guys probably know, all manner of chicanery is alive and well in the vintage/antique/collectible markets. That said, I’ll trade one of my Ted Williams baseballs for one Gibson/Ibanez guitar. Any takers? I have been working with Ibanez on “the book.” Since Hoshino is publishing the tome themselves, it’s been through a number of revisions and updates and still doesn’t have a deadline. There is much time and effort invested in it, so it most definitely will make it into print – I just don’t know when. Roy Miyahara and I went to see The Other Ones (surviving Grateful Dead members) in Philly on Sunday. It was just like old times, except that I could still stand at the end of the night. Weir’s hair and beard are nearly as grey as mine, but he is a year younger. They played very well. Lots of old R&B. I thought it was interesting that they have two keyboard players as well as tow drummers. I guess one’s a spare for when the other inevitably checks out. I’ll try to be a more frequent visitor to The Hole. Speak with you all soon. Very sorry to hear about the scooter incident. Thanx for the update on the Ibanez book. I know I'm not the only one getting impatient! We've had some interesting items/questions come up in the last few months. Hopefully you'll have some time to search 'em out and share your ideas. I can answer the bike questions. I sold my trusty FXLR Low Rider a little over a year ago and got a Softail Deuce. Did the engine warm-up with Big Bore kit, cams, forged pistons, flatslide carb, performance exhaust, etc. Whatever wasn't black got chromed. It was a very strong runner with really charismatic low end. Pretty much everything but the engine and transmission was destroyed in the wreck. So the rebuild is from the frame up. My new riding philosophy is "See Me, Hear Me." The paint will be "orange wave" which is kind of a pearlescent, electric, school bus yellow, with red flames. I've asked Santa to bring me an air horn for Chrismas. I'm guessing that I'll have it together by April Fool's. Or maybe I should just glue mirrors to the entire thing. I love big ol' land yachts as much as the next guy, but Munch's Olds looks too much like the geezermobile that took me out. Hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving. I gave up my bike right after getting married (22 years ago this Saturday), but managed to kiss the pavement a few times before giving it up. Do you go down to Wildwood, NJ in September? A lot of cool stuff has gone by since you last checked in. Speaking of the Grateful Dead, an MC400LE that was presented to Jerry Garcia came up for discussion here (and ebay auction). Your name was mentioned as having been part of the story. Is it true that Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir were part of the design team that gave birth to the Musician series? Check out the thread called: "Another MC5000 on ebay!!!", in the Vintage & Custom Electrics section. It is a real handful to drive in peak hour traffic and parking is a nightmare. Petrol is currently 92c per litre which is approx 50c in US money. Let's see, how many really expensive vintage Ibanez Jazz boxes, Professionals or Limited Editions could I get for the price of one really nice Hog? Also, I don't have to winterize any of my guitars, put them under a tarp in the garage during the winter months and wait patiently for the first "warm" day to play them. Then too, I've never been run down by an Oldsmobile (or any other vehicle) while soloing to Freebird, either. That's not to say that I don't get a near overwhelming surge of nostalgia on the first warm spring day, seeing all the bikers come out of hibernation. Munch: That works out to about $1.90 per gallon, here. I pay around $1.50 per. When I first started driving it was around $0.35 per. This whole thread is making me feel VERY old! My last and only "big" car was a '71 Pontiac Lemans Sport convertible, automatic with a 350 (guzzle, guzzle). But I really loved that car, until it died. Then I bought my first new car, a Volkswagon Rabbit. I started out inheriting a '70 Peugout 504 from the parents and quickly traded it for a '72 Triumph GT6. (The Inspector Clouseau look was not as cool as James Bond, especially for a 17 year old.) Steve: My remark about "not allowed" was written with tongue-in-cheek. Since the Carter days, we've been conditioned to expect mid 20s and up, for mpg. And considering the $/gallon, these days, it's been a good thing. The big SUV thing does buck that trend, though. Someday someone will explain to me why my 6 cylinder, '00 Jeep Cherokee only gets 15mpg around town...it fits in the same parking spot as my old '87 Honda Accord. I think this thread has been hijacked by the vehicle lover in us all. So it's bikes in summer and guitars in the winter. Mind you, there is a bit of overlap around March time. Running a Duc' is a pretty expensive hobby on its own over here without the added complication of hunting down old Ibanez guitars. A major service and tune-up is around £500. Last March I coughed up £990 for that + suspension mods, new tyres, new chain and sprocket. OUCH! But it was worth every penny to enjoy the added performance benefits. We like our sports bikes over here y'know. It's a serious buzz...especially when you get into vert riding ....and guys, it's a lot cheaper than bikes! They used to be a huge vintage Ibanez shop. I bought my 2680 around 10 years ago from them. Now they don't carry much in the way of guitars, and rarely a vintage Ibanez. They took pictures on their rooftop of many Ibanez guitars they sold - lots of nice ones in their photo album. That brings up an interesting point: Jerry Garcia had that exact setup in his guitars for many years. Maybe the MC3000(?) was made for Garcia after all! I suspect one toggle near the output jack is to turn the effects loop on/off and the other is for the EQ/pre-amp. Regarding the three switches on top, two are probably tri-sounds for the pickups and the other is the pickup selector. That would explain everything! mk
