Jeff, I remember working a "Bobby & The Midnites" show in Providence around 1982, and of course Weir was playing the Cowboy Fancy, but I also noticed that Bobby Cochran was playing a VERY similar Ibanez. If memory serves me correctly it had 3 humbuckers, and other than that it looked exactly like Weir's. Do you remember anything about this? TIA, Jeff |

Jeff, I also found a pic of Weir playing a 12/6 double neck with a slotted headstock. Remember anything about this one? Weir with slotted 12/6 |

I think there is a pick in thge Untold Story about this. But it doesn't say anything to solve the mystery. Its propbably a 1 off made just for him. |

i met bobby at winter namm, and he told me about the cowboy guitar that ibanez built for him. he said it was like the weir cowboy, except that it had a little more inlay around the lower bout. if i remember correctly, he mentioned that he still had it. |

On a related topic.. I was watching a special on network televison las night called "The first five years of Saturday Night Live" .it was a retrospective on the "Golden years" of SNL..Anyway in year three there was a short clip of The Grateful Dead and, sure enough, there was Bob Weir playing his "cowboy" very clear footage-you could really see the guitar in action.... |

did he have his "bunny ears" on?? LOL! I actually have the video from SNL when they played Alabama Getaway from 4/5/80. Weir was playing the plain cowboy. Just watched it again, some good shots of it for sure... sounded great too. I traded a couple of emails with a very reliable source who was at winter NAMM, and said IF there is a Cowboy reissue, it might very well be sporting a Modulus Genesis neck....why? He has no idea, and nor do I, but I'm inclined to speculate that it has something to do with Weir's current association with Modulus....who knows! |
