OK, this is not earthshaking stuff here, but I'm just curious... A local TV Sportscaster's last name is 'Ibanez'. That is how he spells it. However, he pronounces it 'Ee-BONN-yez'. It is his surname, so I have to assume he knows how to pronounce it correctly. So do we play, collect and covet 'Eye-bo-nez' guitars, or 'Ee-BONN-yez' guitars?? |

It certainly would depend on your nationality. The 'Ee-BONN-yez' pronounciation would work for Hispanics. Anyone speak Japanese? |

It is pronounced 'Ee-BONN-yez' in Hong Kong, China, Japan, in fact, through out Asia. Same as "Ee-raan", not "I ran"; or "Ee-raaq", not "I-raq". Ace |

And they call Detroit "Dey-twah" in France. This thread has come up before. The name has Spanish origins, and I think the correct Spanish pronunciation would be 'Ee-BONN-yez', or perhaps 'EEE-bon-ETH'. Or maybe EEE-bon-ics But like a lot of surnames, has been Americanized, and 'EYE-bin-ez' is pretty much the accepted pronunciation as far as I'm concerned. |

Ibañez is originally Spanish, and in Spanish it should be pronounced [ibanjes] (that's "eeebanjes" not "I banjos") Ginger |

No one would ever ask an Austrailian about pronunciation, bluesmeister. ;-) j/k!!! All I can say is that in the US (east coast) it's been eye-buh-nez all my life (no stress on any syllable). Hey, Ginger, doesn't the sedilla over the "n" make it a "nyuh" sound rather than "nj" (or is that what you meant)? As in, ee-bahn-yez... |

i think in spanish the word is "ibáñez", pronounced ee-bahn-yez (emphasis on the "a") as chazmo says. the word "ibanez" does not exist in the spanish dictionary. |

Yez, EE-BAN-YEZ SALVADOR EE-BAN-YEZ There are several messages of people who asked questions about very old guitars (around 1880) that carried that full name. Ginger |

i go with Johns. Everyone else from HUSA calls it the same. I alaways pronounced it as such. But to each his own. My last name got pronounced different once it reached America from Hungary when my grand parents moved here. |

Chazmo, my post was made very much tongue in cheek. I'm sure Flatbag, The Cappy, Spiro (where's he these days?) Munch and Six would appreciate the joke. |

Hey Chazmo, I knew you were pulling my leg, no offence was taken. Bonzer is an archaic Australian term meaning 'very good'. It's lapsed into non-usage now, but I'm sure Crocodile Dundee would have used the word. "Gooday Mick, how's it goin'?" "Bonzer, mate..." And for the record we pronounce Ibanez "Eye-buh-nez". |

i'm a sucker for linguistic threads, in fact anytyhing italian... but in a strange smelling little guitar shop in bombay i saw - and i swear to god i am not making this up - an 'ebanez' guitar. there were racks of these things, right next to - i'm telling the truth - a rack of 'givson' and also 'hobner' guitars. all were knock offs, all were grotesque, and they were clearly all birthed by the same sadistic man. you should have heard him pronounce 'ebonez.' the only stranger sound in the shop was when you strummed the bugger - the guitar not the little man - cheeze. and rotten at that. cheers all. |
