How do the older ARs sound compared to the new ones?

Well Dbraman, its a bit like saying how long is a piece of string. It's a matter of personal opinion.
For my 2 cents worth, your Ol' Cappy believes that the models from the mid to late 70's that have the Super 70's fitted sounded great as do the current models that are fitted with the Super 58's . My only negative with the Super 80's series in the early 80's models would be that they are a bit to bright and bitey on the top end. Some people loved that others didn't. It's all up to the individual players taste.

Anybody else want to throw 2 cents into the fray ?

Captain Ibanez :-)

Dbraman,

Ibanez virtually made an Artist model for every occasion.
I'd have to say that the early bolt on models with the super 70's are very similar in sound to the newer AR200/AR300 and have nice bit of grunt to them. But, the big variation is with the 24fret 2618 and 2710. The pups are closer together and certainly have a more mellow tone.

Then you start adding Tri-sound,EQ, ebony fret boards, through necks, the sounds are almost unlimited. I know some aren't fans of the super 80's, but fitted in the EQ models they just plain growl.
Newer AR's dont vary as much as the older models. The new AR200 is somewhat disappointing because of the weak pups, AR300 is a great player, but still a litle lacklustre. The AR2000 and AR3000 are brighter (super 58's) than super 70's. Certainly, my AR2000 has a big output, clear sound, that adheres well to sound effect pedals.

Throw an AR100 with V2's and an AR120 with IBZ's into the mix and you have an even wider range of tone to work with.

Snow...don't you have to clarify further by the years. Seems folk out here talk about first issue and reissue for both the Super58 and Super70 as if they are night and day.

Just curious. I would not change a thing with my axes as they all have first issue Super 58's and Super70's. Never owned a reissue so I'm no expert

And I agree whole-heartedly on your take for the EQ/Super80 integration...they smoke.

I did play an AR300 form the 90's and I was not as impressed...tone was definitely not the same...

Hey sorry Strings,

I should pointed out the AR2000 I use has the new issue super58's, and they are incredibly clean sounding. Certainy on a par with any Gibson LP I've owned.

My son has the AR200 fitted with the AH1 & AH2 pups, and they are a bit disappointing considering how good a player it is. Those pups are pretty weak and do suffer a fair bit of feedback. Great for a small amp, not so good with anything over 30watts.

I don't know if Ibanez ever did a re-issue of the super70's, but it would be great to see it in an AR200 or AR250.

No apology necessary...it just seems that there are critical differences between original and re-issue p-ups from what I've read out here. I wouldn't know as I have nothing really to compare it to. You would think Ibanez would have painstakingly matched the originals, but it does not seem as though that's a reliable assumption.

I don't have my Super70s anymore. But I do have original 58s in one Artist and two others with 80s/EQ and I love 'em!

Best,
EJ
