Hi Captain I am a new UK member of the Board and thought I would drop you a line about the SF470 as I understand you designed it? I have suffered the nightmare of nightmares in that I have damaged a disc in my neck and now find it painful to play! So, I need a light guitar and am lucky enough to own an SF470. I only play fixed bridge guitars so really want to bring this beast up to its max potential. Basically I don't like the stock pickups but have found that the alternatives I have tried always seem to sound dark! Is this a characteristic of the guitar or am I just unlucky - I am currently using the Carvin Holdsworth pups which are great in other guitars? As I like 70s fusion in the style of early Holdsworth (with Soft Machine), groups like Camel and even some of the great session guys like Carlton - I obviously don't need a super distortion type of pup. I do want something that sounds full but clear with good harmonics and a bit of snap - although definitely not trebly or bright. I am not a Duncan fan and am looking at Di Marzios - have you got any thoughts on what might fit the bill (I don't want them to be underpowered either though as I also like smooth sustain)? Also wiring that Otax switch is a bit of a bitch, do you have a favored way of wiring it? Finally, and I know this isn't your territory, do you have any suggestions where I could try and pick up a mint SF420, and especially a FGM200??? The 200 would be my perfect guitar but I have looked and looked to no avail? Well not finally, does the 24.75 inch scale length of the 470 mean is has a lighter string tension than the 25+ inch guitars? And.........were there ever any Prestige type models with nice maple tops that had fixed bridges - but not the SC models with those disgusting knob recesses that really ruined the look of the guitar (sorry if it was one of yours LOL)? I think Ibanez should seriously think of reintroducing a version of the SF470! Hope this all made sense?! And hope I can find what I am looking for so I can enjoy playing again?! BTW for all you vintage collectors I have a beautiful burgundy PF300 if you want guitar porn LOL? Thanks in advance for your help, Enrico |
