I have never tried a Super80 but liked the V2's on my 81 AS50 very much. I also liked the V2 on my friend's Destroyer. They sound punchier than Super58's and have an edge to it. Seems like the Super80's have similar characteristics. How do the two compare?

V2's have huge coil windings with a DC resistance of 15-16k ohms. They are similar in design to a DiMarzio Super Distortion. LOTS of output, heavy on the mids, not too bright, tight bottom end.

A Super58 neck with a V2 bridge is just about the perfect combination IMHO. Note, Ibanez thought it was pretty good too judging from the long run of Destroyer II's with that combination!

The alternative is the later model V1/V2 setup. Nicely balanced pair (again, MHO)

Can't compare the V2 directly to a Super80 as I've never had the two side by side.

Cheers

Guys this is a good question to throw into the frey on pickups.

At the time that the Captain was gainfully employed in selling Ibanez in the retail sector ( sorry, excuse me , did you ask if we sell Gibson or Fender ? that's right, out you go and give your self an uppercut and come back in and ask me to show you a real guitar ! )...who said the Captain was biased !........oops anyway at the time of the change over to the Super 80's and I still can't come to terms with the Super 88's.
I found that the Super 80's were a bit to bright for my ears.Though I must admit that they would sustain their heads off, henceforth any Ibanez with these pickups were an instant seller, I think players of that time were a bit over having to buy a brand of choice and change the pickups to Dimarzio, but at the same time the effects pedal era was just starting to take off. If you were able to explain things the right way a Ibanez would stay wholesome:).Still with me being a rhythm guitarist, I had become acustom to the warthm of a Super 70 series. Still when it comes to the crunch, I think a V2 kicks a Super 80's ass for 80's CockRock style music, but the Super 80 will always have it's place as a super versitile bright allround pickup...:)

Super80's???

What I reckon they're great for is country and rockabilly. My 2622EQ out-twangs my Gretsch Duojet, and that baby is loaded with TV Jones pickups!

If you use the middle position, that guitar is unbelievable in terms of vintage bell like fingerpickin' down home country funk.

Cheers,

Mark
