Okay. I have As-200 and a 78 musician. both have a little toggle switch that is not the PU selector. I've been told different things from different people what this actually does. On the As-200 there is only 1 and on the musicain there is 2. can anyone solve this riddle for me with an official answer. Also is the a schematic for the electronics for these models? |

Hi Boogieknight.. Those small toggle switches are the "famous" tri-sound switches, that utilize all possible combinations of a normal humbucker exept the possibility to choose coil on single coil mode. They are a very special DPDT toggle switch variety meaning that on the center position there is an "inconsistent" contact on the switch. The toggle switch positions are: 1) Toggle up - humbucker with both coils on, coils in series. Most powerful option. 2) Toggle middle - only the other coil is in circuit so the humbucker in single coil mode 3) Toggle down - humbucker with both coils on but in parallel, output reduced, more trebly Replacement switches can be found, I´ve used Gotoh MS-500 XF, FTPA 41 and JBT(sorry, could not find the stock number) but they are fairly uncommon. Black anodized toggles are quite difficult to find so I have had to settle on the chrome-plated variety. They are not phase switches, which is the common argument in most of the cases. If toggle is normal DPDT with leads soldered in "X" in the bottom, then they are for phase reversal. |

Hi guys, the switches with the flat black handle are available at http://www.guitarelectronics.com/, part no. is SWMB23. Also on that site you can find wiring diagrams for the Tri-Sound modes. Speaking of Tri-Sound modes: So far I found 3 variations of Tri-Sound wiring, depending on model and/or year... '79 Musician MC300-LE: 1) Toggle up: Serial Coils (Humbucking mode) 2) Toggle center: Single Coil 3) Toggle down: Serial Coils (Reverse Phase) '78 Performer PF300: 1) Toggle up: Serial Coils (Reverse Phase) 2) Toggle center: Single Coil 3) Toggle down: Serial Coils (Humbucking mode) '84 Artist AR305: 1) Toggle up: Serial Coils (Humbucking mode) 2) Toggle center: Single Coil 3) Toggle down: Parallel Coils Juergen |

Ah thank you gentleman one and all, it's good to see that the Captain can still have a Wild Turkey break now and then. I appreciate your support and the sharing of knowledge on this website.....Cheers Captain Ibanez. |

Okay so on my artist, up to down the level gets noticable louder. There are other slight variations but an slight increase in level is most noticable. "1) Toggle up: Serial Coils (Humbucking mode) 2) Toggle center: Single Coil 3) Toggle down: Parallel Coils" So would this configuration be the explaintion for this? |

Juergen: Could the difference in the '78 & '79 be explained by the switch being "upside down" (compared to the other)? Or is there a way to determine the correct orientation and then say for sure that the wiring is different? |

Boogieknight, you have the switch working the other way, there seems to be a quite number of variations, I have an Artist that performs the same way as yours, another that is wired other way, and as we read earlier, the switches on Musician and Performer do other tricks.. Quite an innovative bunch o´ guys on the Hoshino wiring shop.. But anyway, humbucker with coils in parallel is not as loud as coils in series... |

Boogieknight: The 'Humbucking mode' is the loudest, so the second configuration should be the correct one. John: the wiring is actually slightly different: The second coil is connected to the left contacts of the switch instead to the lowest ones. I'll try to draw the diagrams of the different configurations and post them as soon as possible. Juergen |

Thanks for the input this is great. Just to confuse matters, on my 78 musician there are 2 of these swithes, are they for each PU? |

Boogie: Yes, one switch for each pickup. They should operate identically. |
