Avarst there crewmembers,

Are You A Collector or A Apreciator ?

Seems to me lately, that little squables are occuring here over the prices over our beloved product....eg: Ebay etc. Oh you paid way to much for that or you stole it ya bastard at that price !.

Should there be an air of resistance over what our product is worth...if you are going to shove it under the bed for the future fortune or should it be that it was a good deal to me cause I've always wanted this model.

I make no further comment at this stage until we get some heartfelt honesty happeing with this thread...don't be shy...what do you reckon?

I'd consider myself both to some extent - with over a dozen Ibanez guitars in my hands I have to be considered a collector by definition but then everyone of them gets played as often as I can because I appreciate fine instruments.

Whilst I acknowledge the reality of the situation I do lament the emergence of the investing collector as we will obviously end up following a similar trend to that already trodden by Gibson and Fender and price players out of the market.

It's an interesting topic. Somebody asked me the other day what would happen to them after I drop off this mortal coil and I replied by saying that I'd probably reduce the collection to 4 by then and someone else could sort out that problem.

It got me to thinking (by way of digressing) about which 4 I'd keep - seeing that as a regularly playable number by the time I reach advanced dotage (some would say I am already there).

Buggered if I could get down to 4 no matter what I sacrificed.
Of the acoustics I figured I'd keep a 6 and a 12 so the sentimental choice was my original 698-6 and a mint 684-12. But this means discarding a very sweet 756-12, a 695-6 and the daily playing Garrison 6 and 12. So far, so good - I could probably live with that although the new custom Maton coming my way might have to make a 3rd.

Couldn't get down to two electrics though. The AM205 is a must to stay as I love it; likewise the 2451 has to stay for the awesome array of sounds even if no one rates them highly. I could probably just part with the 2377 SG copy although I'd miss the whammy bar and no doubt the 2402 twin will be too heavy for a frail old bastard so it could go to a new home. I couldn't part with the mint (and unbelievable) 2618-12; the silky smooth 2377 Custom or the 3 humbucker tones of the 2341 which hasn't even got here yet and I've yet to get my hands on the rebuild I'm having done to make a judgement on its' chances.

Not to mention the half dozen other models I'd like to own before I keel over - assuming the rising prices don't mean that I have to supplement my retirement income with a little opium trading to keep me in reasonable guitars.

Think I'll just go and get some nice medication now and have a lay down .....

Cheers
Russ

I'm an appreciator. I only own 4 Ibanez electrics and none of them is 100% original anymore. I love the guitars but have always fealt that if I could improve their playability, performance, or tone, then I would do whatever it takes to accomplish this. So I have 4 Ibanez electrice - 4 awesome players that look great, sound great, and play incredible. They are the standard by which I judge all other guitars (and the standard that other guitars fail to meet).

That said, if I were to buy an old, rare Ibanez, I'd seriously consider keeping it original. Like an AS400 for example - no need to ever monkey with that one.

Interesting topic...I agree with Steve, I must also be an "Appreciator" because more often than not I'm "buying" not "selling". I have expanded my realm of ":Appreciation" as I have collected these guitars-My personal taste has gone from "Gibson Set Neck Snob" to appreciator of well made guitars. I find the way this brand developed in the US to be a fancinating subject and to be able to play these instruments as "punctuation" to that story is truly amazing. I will not always have a large collection of Ibanez guitars as i am priviledged to have now, but I will always have a couple, and I will always appreciate them in the manner in which they were intended-by playing them !

Ok so I've 13 guitars....of that, three are Ibanez and one is an Antoria.......I try to play them all. I collect to play...now at last I have one of every sonic type (strat, tele,Les Paul, tele thinline, OM acoustic, Dreadnought acoustic, classical acoustic, SG, Bass)...The only ones that might interest me at this point are the weird and wonderful axes like a Destroyer or a Moderne...thing is I'm not so desparate anymore...But as long as there are many Brand names that come under Ibanez that pawn shop guys don't realise (Mann, Luxor, Isonez, Kasuga, Greco,Antoria) and going for comparitive peanuts...I will be compelled to buy!!!...I agree that at some point in the near future they will become 2nd division investment grade after vintage Fender and Gibson .

Russ, good to see you shopping downunder for a Maton....a very nice home grown product for Ol' Captain Ibanez...but to throw a spanner into the works for all ...If you ever get the opportunity to A-B a Maton Southern Star from the mid 70's up against a Tama TM105 guitar...you will be suprised.

Guy's don't stop here....what is your thought's on later models too...this is all good feedback for me as well as the other thread regarding what you want to see re-issued...it all goes into my note book for what Ibanez fans want to have available to them..to be honest I hand in my homework every 12 months with the factory.

Cool thanx Cap! By the way I have an old Ibanez Paul Stanley Poster that I got from a printing shop I used to work for back in 1981. We used to do a lot of Hoshino work back then. it was called Brook Trout Press in Trevose PA. Although I think the poster may have been printed elswhere we did a lot of lay out work and pre press things for them.

I'd say I'm a appreciator also, not a collector, I have a 1976 white and Gold hardware (3 humbuckers) SG copy. I bought it brand new in 1976 in melbourne australia.
It is a wounderful guitar and still shares its stage duty along with my strat. The SG has a really fat sound thanks to a Dimazio pickup I put on it about 20 years ago.
I am bitterly disapointed with the new Ibanez guitars as they dont have any character due to so many different models and cheap guitars that should have been left to olthers or rebranded.

I'm a collector, but not for financial reasons. I love Ibanez and currently have 9 electrics and 1 acoustic 12-string. All Ibanez and all different colours (except for two green ones, because it's my favourite colour). I have no money at the moment and although the thought of selling a guitar to get some fast cash always crosses my mind, I JUST CAN'T DO IT!

Well I am 1st an appreciator. I got my 1st Ibanez almost 2yrs ago, which was the AS-400. This GTR opened my eyes to Ibanez. I really love this GTR. So I started doing some research and strarted checking out other Ibanez's. Wow, they made some really great GTR's, especially for the price. So over time I've gotten into collecting. I do have a little project studio and justify my purchases by adding fresh tones to the studio. Which is not really why a get'em. They just make some great GTR's. I play them all pretty regularly. but the AS-400 is top dog. Other then the 2nd As-400 I've bought(which i just had to have, Thank You John), i also justify my purchases by getting good deals, knowing that i will be able to get my money back or more if i decide to re-sell.

I still think there oughtta be a law against owning two AS400's.

I agree, it's not fair. But what about guys like Chinery who collect boatloads of rare guitars just to put them in glass cases and sell picture books of their collection. Those guitars aren't even being played, and that is a crime.

As for the two AS400s, we're just jealous.

Well, one I play everyday, which is the 1st one i bought. It is not in orginal condition. the tuners, pick up selector, and strap knob have been changed. It was like this when i bought it. I have since changed the pick gaurd(custom made copy) in order to save the one on it.(the binding was starting to pull off) And after about a year of owning it, i started saving and keeping my eyes open for another one. That's the second one I bought, which is absolutly mint. Basically, one for the road, one for the studio.

I starting playing Ibanez in 1978 (CN100).
I'm up to five now(Custom Agent,Luthiker,
AS-50, 2617, CN100)and alway rotate them for
various gigs. To buy them and hide them away
in storage is JUST WRONG, possibly evil.
Okay a bit overboard, but they are meant
to be played as well as admired.

Craig..Scott Chinery commissioned the Blue guitars to preserve a few examples of what is a dying artform-the Archtop guitar-and as homage to to late Jimmy DA'quisto..without his vision (and consiterable investment) these handcrafted examples of some of the worlds greatest luthiers would not exist for all of us to enjoy-(part of the Blue guitar collection is in the Smithsonian) Scotts vision and will legacy will remain for all of us to enjpy for many years to come. Yea, it would be nice to play some of his $100,000 + Blue guitars-but its equally cool that they were commissioned in the first place that we can preserve this art for future generations.Scott was a real good dude and does not deserve to be "dissed"...

Your point is valid. Maybe I shouldn't have specifically named Mr. Chinery, but there are other collectors who horde vintage guitars just as investment. Nothing illegal about it, just makes it harder for us to ever own our own vintage guitar. I still stand by the idea that, in general, guitars should be played.

Posted on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 8:52 am:

Craig, your point is well taken-I absolutely agree with you-but just because an individual owns an extensive collection dosn't mean that the guitars do not get played...I personally own over 250 vintage guitars and regularly rotate and play most of them as well as share them with students and friends. ( I do not look at my collection as a financial "Investment"-rather an investment in the brand (mostly Ibanez) and the era/type of music (Rock)-specifically for my/others enjoyment).

I think that collecting guitars and playing them is GREAT !! The fact that you share them with others is FANTASTIC !! You are someone who deserves to own as many guitars as you want to own.

I agree, as long as the guitars are being used
collecting is great, sharing with other, even
better!
