'76 destroyer question

Author Message Gregb (Gregb) Posted on Saturday, May 01, 2004 - 9:58 pm:    I have an Oct '76 Destroyer that is a transparent cherry color with a black pickguard. Both seem to be original (in my very amateur opinion). Did they ever make on that wasn't korina with white pickguard? Any info would be appreciated. It is, by the way, a great player, even despite the fact that the thing weighs more than I do! I would say some previous owner has had it re-finished...but hey what the hell..it's different to say the least but sadly not original. At least someone did a pretty decent job of it, and, if nothing else it is a pretty damn good playing and sounding guitar. I thought they did lawsuit copies of the more "current" Gibson flying V designs as well as the korina ones - I have seen them in red. Post some photos of your guitar, maybe that will help. At that time, no other finish Explorer was known. Only later on, in the 80's, Ibanez made a sunburst "Destroyer" with tigerstripe top that looked like an Explorer.
