I'm trying to find out what model my Ibanez is as the neck has recently been broken, it just says RG series on the headstock, I thought it was an RG 470, the serial number is 93123735, with what looks like a smudged S, or J in front of it.

Is it possible to id. the model from this, then I can go about ordering a new neck...or getting some insurance money for a new one if it's not worth it.

Any suggestions appreciated,

Cheers

The serial number doesn't give anything but factory and build date info. We'll need a complete detailed discription or photo to give you a model number.

Dave:

Steve would know better, but it looks like an RG470 to me. Probably Jewel Blue finish.

I agree with John's conclusion, RG470.

However, the 8 digit serial number is a curiosity, and the pickups lack any markings.

I'm guessing the serial number indicates a 1993 build.

'93 sounds about right - I'm pretty sure that's about when I got it - it has sentimental value, I'd recently stopped playing electric a few years before that, sticking to acoustic, and was just getting back into playing in bands, my wife (girlfriend at the time) had inherited some money from her gran, and blew it all on this guitar for me :)

I play a Gibson Les Paul mostly these days, but I'm looking for another guitar that is a little more forgiving to play, and will allow me to play with the trem, without having to retune all the time.

I was looking an the EDR470LX, the only negatives I've seen mentioned are the string changing times. I'm considering a Strat too, but have never been 100% comfortable with them during the short times I have tried them out, and that Ibanez has always been a pleasure to play, although the pickups always lacked any serious punch.

Well, thanks very much for your help chaps, it's greatly appreciated.

Cheers
