My question is, do pickups make that much difference to you all...lets leave the tremolo out of it.

pickups *do* make a difference, but i think the feel of the neck is what'll stand out.

Good point Eric, but I think there's not a lot of room to move with the neck scenario.

Reviving this old thread. I just purchased an SA1260, slightly used for a great price :-) Haven't received it yet, but I'm excited, as I've wanted one for quite some time. The purchase was based purely on my experience with the SA160 and SA220, which I though were nothing short of great for the price. If I like the low end Korean ones so much, the Prestige version has to be great. We'll see soon.

As for the pickups on the SA1260, V2s and mahogany always make for a good time. But I've never really liked the S1 single coil - there are much better sounding strat style PUs, and the strong magnetic pull causes problems. So I'm pretty sure they'll be replaced. I would probably opt for something stacked, either Kinmans or DiMarzio Virtual Vintage 2.2. This way I can wire them to cancel hum when used in conjunction with one of the humbucker coils. I'll post when I get the guitar.

The AT300 has Dimarzio Cruiser single coils and a Dimarzio Andy Timmons humbucker. Cruisers are nice. They are fairly stratty, and generally good for clear clean tones. Not sure about the AT bucker. I'd love to get my paws on an AT300 (or AT100!).

The AT300 has a much more strat like neck: 40.5mm nut, 21mm thick, and 305mm radius. The SA1260, if it is anything like the 160 neck is wider and flatter. It looks like Andy pretty much wanted a souped up strat for his signature model, down to the Wiklinson VSVG vintage style trem.

One question Cappy: The AT300 picture you posted looks like it has a flat top, unlike the contoured top on the SA, and on the AT300 currently pictured at the Ibanez site.

I got my SA1260 yesterday. It is a nice guitar. More understated than some of the other Prestige models - just a good player. Aside from being mahogany, and having a humbucker, it has a very strat vibe, in the feel, sound, shape and weight of the instrument. The neck feels traditional, except for the jumbo frets. The sound is pure strat in positions 2 to 5. As I suspected, the sound of the V2 in position 1 is warbley and lacking in clarity - probably because of the S1s which have a very strong magnetic field, could be the bridge too. The TZ pro bridge is a nice simple piece of hardware. It is smooth and comfy. The saddles are held down by springs rather than locking screws. The countersunk knobs are a nice touch. As far as finish goes, it is a very nice burst on a nice 2 piece chunk of mahogany. The dot inlays are abalone. The only real piece of flash is the trus rod cover, which is black anodized brushed aluminum with mirror polished edges - pretty subtile.

Nice One Sven, glad you like it. Its a great guitar and those flashy truss rod covers aren't cheap either...so don't misplace it.

Gave her a full setup on Monday. Also, I screwed the S1s down as far as they would go, and sure enough, the tone of the V2 cleaned up! Of course now positions 2-5 sound weak as can be. But position 1 sounds great.

I realize the S1 has been an Ibanez standby over the last 15+ years, but I've gotta say this pickup is a real tone and sustain sucker in my opinion. It's noisy on it's own, and those magnets could pull the space shuttle out of orbit. I think Ibanez should go with a splitable AlNiCo 2 stack design that would cancel hum in all 5 positions.
