I have what is -as near as I can tell - an '89 RG570 w/S#F929721 w/Maple Wizard neck, V1/S1/V2 pickups, edge trem (that currently doesn't stay in tune too well), matching head stock. Here's the deal it's in pretty rough shape, worn frets, hardware is pretty rough, electronics need some cleanup to get rid of static, it's that dark blue color (which honestly I don't care for the color). But... I love the way it plays, so I'm debating a rebuild and setup by a good local custom shop, including a custom repaint, re-fret or at less dressing. Question - am I crazy? is that too much money to put into this beast? I only paid $200 for it years ago. I'd expect I'd end up putting several hundred at least to get it the way I want it. Thoughts anyone? |

Best advice IMO-DIY it! Get some De-ox it or contact cleaner for the pots, dress up the frets a bit with some XXX steel wool(be careful tocover up the pickups well as the steel wool will be atracted to them!!!)oil the board ,restring it-being sure to while adjusting trem angle while tuning to pitch, set the truss rod for proper bow and finally set the string height. Forget about the finish and wail away....Thats my take on it-HTH Bob |

I think you could probably get this guitar up and running with very little cash outlay. It would be a fun and educational experience - I actually derive a lot of joy and relaxation from cleaning up old guitars. I disassemble the guitar, clean all the parts, polish and wax (non-silicone) the body, clean and oil the fretboard, polish the frets and put is back together and set it up - I'm always surprised at how much better they play and sound. You may be able to revive the electronics by spraying some contact cleaner in the switches and pots (available from stewmac.com) I think, whatever you do, you should go to eBay and do a little research and find out the value of this guitar, maybe see what one in better condition would go for, and how common they are. This may influence how much you want to put into it. -Sven |
