I've heard it said that the V2 pickup design was based on the DiMarzio Super Distortion. Were the V2s, or any other of the classic Ibanez pickups actually manufactured by DiMarzio, or by Ibanez or someone else?

Funkle , of the top of my head I would think that these may have been made by Maxon in Japan.Dimarzio, made the IBZ USA series from the late 80's and still make the IBZ/Dimarzios for them. I will shoot a email to Japan to confirm this info with the "elders"

Yes V2's were made in Japan but... I have 2 made by dimarzio!! (came out of a PGM they have pink bobbins.) They are brass base plate with V2 and Made in USA stamped on the back.. Not a normal occurence though... will post pics..

As I said to Spiro on the phone today ...thanks for the extra work you SOB.

The Original white V2's in the early 80's guitars where made at Maxon..Japan, however, the later (90's) V1, V2, V7, V8,S1,S2,where a combined effort between Dimarzio and Ibanez as well as the USA Series pickups labeled USA C /F etc were apart of this collaberation,This is still current today as is the new partnership with EMG and Seymour Duncan. It just leads us us into the cool zone for tomorrows collectables today !

Does it really matter who made 'em?

Sadly Steve, some people really feel the need to know this kind of info, otherwise their lives are incomplete or they are unable to sleep at night
