Right now I sand the back of my other necks down and toung oil them.
What did Ibanez use to get that "satin" neck finish like on the PL 1550/1770/1880 guitars??
Can I do this my self??? |

If it's anything like the satin finish necks on the '90s models, they have a matte clear coat. It is sprayed on just like a glossy finish, only it is not rubbed out in the end, so you have to be careful about dust and debris.

I have a few guitars with the matte finish on them. mine have all turned glossy on the neck from playing! |

Yeah, they get glossy pretty soon. Some 0000 steel wool will cure that.

From what I can feel.. The proline series necks were tung oiled or a similar oil used.. The later guitars have a satin finish on the back of the neck and feel different.. |

The finish is not real smooth, very raw feeling, like nothing has ever been put on the back of the neck.It's like they never finish sanded it. I think it's more than just a oiled finish because when I sand and toung oil my other necks,the wood color doesn't change very much and the back of the neck(s) are much smoother when I'm done.I have a PL 1550 maple neck that the back of the neck is MUCH darker that the fretboard.It's not a clear coat either, no shine what so ever.It's not like the back of a "strat" maple neck(clear coated). |

Yes the Proline was Oil finish Watko actually from the USA. The Matte finish is a 2 part spray that is just sprayed on and it has the matte feel, No sand no buff.
I also like the neck to feel smoother than oil but rouger than gloss, For oil you need to clean the dirt out first, Use Witch hazel on a rag and wipe the dirt out.
Next is my trick, very simple #800 sand paper just quickly sand the neck to what you like it to feel like. You can also use #0000 steel wool but this is a little smooth for my taste.
