Are they basically the same alnico design and output from the 70's? Some say the new issues sound different (better/worse) than the original issue pickups. If they're upgraded, or changed from the original, when did Ibanez change them? I dig them in my AR2000 so much that I dropped a 'new' set into my '79 2630. Still very sweet and balanced for all types of music. Any information on new vs originals? |

The only difference I know of is the 3 to 2 screw mounting. I have both vintage and new and although one guitar has duo sound and the new plain 3 way switch wired they both are pleasing to the ear. |

The manufacture has changed, The winding machines have changed and also the materials probably like the wax, Plate maker and some other components have changed. They are would the exact same with the same construction and teh same magnet and wire. Older pickups loose strength (Gause) because the magnets over time weeken. Also wax Crumbles. So the answer is they are teh same spec but made by a different pickup maker, Ibanez used Maxxon, Gotoh and also Fuji-Gen wound pickups for them. If you listen to say a Korean Super 58 in a AS120, You will hear that although it is made to the same spec it is not even close to the Japanese made ones. Ibanez will proboably switch to all Korean made pickups soon because the price in Japan is so high. Jim |

Thanks Jim. Any way to tell if the 58's are Korean or Japanese origin? I purchased my replacement set in 2002 from Ibanez via Guitar Center. They sound great so it seems a good bet that they are Japanese...(?) Also, is it safe to assume that since AR2000 and 3000 both state "Made in Japan" on their headstock, that it includes p'ups? Finally, with all of the internal deterioration of wax and magnets, why is there such a market for old pickups like Gibson's vaunted 59 era'PAF's? Ibanez did a great job copying PAF design and sound in the 58. Did they scrimp on alnicos and parafin wax?? |
