I am thinking about buying an Ibanez AFS75TD and hope to use it for vintage surf music. Is this guitar a hollow or semi hollow body. What do you recommend (if needed) for a hotter pickup for the surf music? Thanks Mike |

Full Hollow Body. I think the "F" in AFS stands for "Full".
Hotter Pickup for the Surf Music? I wouldn't think you'd want a hotter pickup for surf music. Maybe lots of reverb...
For a true surf-music vibe, I'd think you'd want to look at solid body guitars with single coil pickups. I'm no surf-music expert, but if you consider the Beach Boys, the Ventures, and Dick Dale, you really might want to consider a Strat or Mosrite style guitar - but that's not saying you can't play surf music on this guitar. I've recently been filmed playing "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" on my AF75TDOR !! |

Hollowbodies were used extensively for rock and surf back in the day. They have a very bright twangy sound from the bridge pickup. Too much gain can result in feedback.

The Fender Jaguar and Jazzmaster are the definitive Surf guitars. Mosrites get it done too.

You could go with a Mosrite style guitar and do very well - there are a number of decent copy Mosrites out there: Univox High Flyers, Danelectro Hodads, Wilson Brothers (now sponsors of a couple of the Ventures). There are always some of those for sale on eBay. Would make good surf music.
Hard to not think Strats too when talking surf music... Dick Dale, Beach Boys all used strats. |

You would need to try one out, Guitar Center has them, I went to GC last week in Brea and it seems they are not carring any Ibanez guitars except for artcore, they have full bases but the walls were filled with Schecter and the Ibanez area was filled with PRS models?
I am not sure why, maybe the price increases are pushing Ibanez out of the competitive market again,
