Hi Jim (or anyone who chooses to answer),

Two questions regarding the late '78? thru '79 AR500 transition model that seemed to utilize the remaining 2622EQ bodies and p-ups:

-How many were made/shipped?
&
-Is the EQ board in the '79 the exact same as those used in the '80-'83 AR500 model?

Thanks in advance!

Srings, the EQ boards are the same in my -78 "Steve Miller" and -80s AR 500, bodies differ as well as "battery compartment"..the 2622 has battery installed in the control cavity. So changing the battery is tedious job in the older guitars.
Concerning the body dimensions, my newly acquired beauty, the elusive AR 400, has, lo and behold, the old body... it is from 1979, K- (september) built..
The remaining stock of Super80 pickups seems to be used in the AR500s well into 1980.. The aforementioned AR 400 has "Flying Fingers"...

Fox, so the boards are the same through out the Artist line. Thanks!

Yes, my '79 AR 500 (like your 400) and My '78 2622 have identical everything...except AR500 has master tone, trisounds, a slightly different headstock inlay and new (separate) batterey location.

But, (assuming Flying Fingers & Super80s are synonomous, which I believe they are) I'm not so sure the Super80 stuck around after the body change (from the 2622 type to the stout-er body...which shipped with the 58s). Do you know different? I've never seen a "Fattty", as I call them, equippeed with Super80s.

Let's keep the question to Jeff, but expand it a little: How many '79 AR 400s and how many '79 AR500s were ever made/shipped?

Strings, that maybe true, fatter body + Super 58:s..
Anyway, as far as I know, the 3-band EQ board is the same throughout not only Artist-range, but on the Musicians as well.. I have recapped some Musician-EQ boards as well..
The AR 400 is a totally different, having a very small board (2-band EQ) I have not yet tested mine, because I must first check some things, and maybe I have to change the battery cable.. Battery clip buttons are very badly corroded..maybe a leaking battery sometimes..

Yep, the Boards were the same on the Artist and Musician models, although there were actually 2 versions of the PCB:

The 1st version was used until 1980 and is listed as part #3170-6 in the parts catalog printed in March '80. Several of those were sold on Ebay some time ago.

PCB 1

Either later in 1980 or 1981 the 2nd version of the PCB showed up. It featured a JRC4558D chip.

EQ was also used on the Studio line. My ST300 uses the same board as the 3170-6 (same as my Musician and Artist) that Juergen pointed out except it had one less filter.

Thanks fellas, I think we've got the EQ board issue covered in spades.

Jim, the verdict is still out: How many skinny '79 AR500s were shipped?

Strings, and all interested Ibanezers, I have to report a third variant, the AR 400 has a completely different board.. It is sort of RC-circuit with no coils.. Picts will follow later this day..

Yogi, yes, it is that lower one..RC-circuit as stated.. All other boards I have seen have been the LC-variant, although there are two different circuit boards used for that circuit.

Where can I get the EQ board... Part No. 3170-6? Mine is fried... or who can fix it?... '79 Artist. Not sure about model, but it is cherry red with pearl/abalone inlays, ebony fret board, gibralter bridge, and flying fingers p/u's. Has two volume controls, three tone controls for active mode only, and active/passive switch. I have another post "'79 Artist" that I posted earlier today. Then I saw this post. Sorry, I'm a newby.}

Thx!

Race, here somewhere are detailed instructions how to recap the EQ-board, I guess that in your case the capacitors have "leaked" and are useless.. It is no big deal for any service guy with electronic skills to recap it (change the electrolytic capacitors). Somewhere here is also the scheme for that board..

Hey Fox! I feel like we're in a bubble on this thread. We know your 400 is mighty rare...after all, Jim returned no data on it above. But, I'm kinda frustrated and confused that no one ever mentions their transitional (I guess the original as it was first) AR 500 from '79. He states there were ~ 100 made above. Isn't that somewhat substantial? Other than Dave G, I know of no ICW members (or otherwise) as owners of this model...seen one one ebay in five years. Strange!

Thoughts?

Best,
Strings
