I recently picked up a japanese-made artist with serial number F98 30404, black with creme binding. It has perloid tuners (also made in japan) super 58s, gibralter bridge, rubber knurled knobs, rubber ring aournd pup switch....all the good stuff. Thing is, I can't find a model that matches up with the features. Def. factory fin...def made in Japan....can anyone out there help?

What country was it purchased in? Many models for Europe and Japan where produced at Fuji while many other went to Cort Korea, At first Glance of course it looks like an AR120 but

HUM
its not, Its also not an AR700 because of the Chrome hardware.

Unfortunately, I don't know its real history (or where it was purchased)....it came to me described as a one-off for a band that wanted a black high end ibanez for an awards show perf, but i never bought that....looks factory to me, but def Japan w/high end components. No other ideas about what it might be? I'm planning to sell it and I don't know what to call it.....????????

Just goes to show you how flexible Ibanez is. They made quite a few guitars that nobody knows about! You seem to have one of them.

Too bad you can't find out anymore details regarding the band it was made for.

yeah....i didn't really buy that original story, but given that I've spoken to everyone from Ibanez USA to every chat board I can find, maybe it's true....but still, it has a serial number and factory code....I would think SOMEONE would know how to track down what model it is....even Gibson, with its own screwy serial number issues, is usally able to give me a date and model.....oh well....I'll just hope someone comes along here, takes a look, and happens to know what it is.....maybe I'll take Japanese lessons and call Fuji.....

Primoff:

Over time, I've found that Hoshino is a more fractured worldwide organization than Gibson. Hoshino took a very regional approach to supplying guitars to its worldwide distributors. That's why Jim asked if you knew what country this came from.

It's very possible that the European, Australian, Canadian, or Japanese domestic distributors ordered something special that the others didn't. It's actually possible that the western USA distributor (Chesbro) ordered something that the eastern region (Hoshino USA) didn't.

Also, some guitar retailers have grown to be large enough that they can order small production runs to their specs (like Guitar Center).

Then you have special projects for artists and endorsers. In the USA, this is usually handled out of the LA "office", but it could have been coodinated through the PA headquarters, too. I've seen special guitars, sometimes modified production guitars, come out of these facilities with production serial numbers.

I hope this helps explain why a definitive answer can be very elusive.

thanks, johns....very helpful. now if someone could come along and say "you have a special order xxxxx" the answer would be complete....with there were speicial non-hardward attributes that could lead me in the right direction, but is seems that many models had the same body/neck construction, with their model designation determined by hardward/finish. Any final ideas before I give up and say "mystery artist"?

Thanks!
