Specification of JSM100 has changed along with some years of production? I have some mixture feeling about this guitar. I have only played two different JSM100s. Once at local music store,I was totally blown away! The tone and playability was unbeliebable. So,I stop looking for As200, and got a Jsm100 through the net auction. The one that I got is 2001 model I think. Beautiful,beautiful finish it has. The sound is acoustically loud,edgey,tight sound. I only play Jazz. My expectation about this guitar was be able to use both warm clean sound and over driven sound. The tone is pretty cool with over drive,but for me clean sound is very poor. Also,I feel sound a lot come from the neck and I don't feel much vibration from the body. I took pick ups off, and looked inside. Grueing job inside body,I can't say they are good job almost like hoe thw Gibson does. I started to be suspicious about lack of body vibration is because of the body grueing. It is either the body was grued with too much grue or ??? I think that's the reason of suffocating clean sound. Also,there are tiny hols underneth the laminated top look like little spaces between top and sound block. In the begining, ther weren't open propery like some of them are open others weren't. So I made them open. The sound get little better. But oviously I can't take top off,I mean I can't remove the top,so I can't do compleate job done. Despite fact that I still like the guitar, this is the one of most beautiful guitar I ever seen. The neck construction is very good. But, the sound wise doesn't satisfy my requirement. Is there something that I can do? Are As200(78-83) better than this? I want a special Ibanez as a strong workhorse. I like Ibanez therefore I expect more than the JSM100 that I have now. If I can improve tonal quality and acoustic sound, I wana keep it. If not, I might have to look for AS200(78-83). PS.I still love Ibanez. Also, who were Tamura and Sugihara? I have heard lots of conflicting info on these topics, and wondered if you could set the record straight. Thanks! That was Nick, He now has Sugi guitars http://www.sugiguitars.com I answered the carved top question somewhere else today. I did state my feeling somewhere else on the JSM. It just does not have the tone of the older ones. To me they are too tightly glued and this kills any acoustic tone. the wood needs to flex a little to get the sound out. Also as you stated you should feel the body in your hand on the neck. If the body is made too tight all the necks tone is absorbed into the body. Or so it seems. Can you make the JSM sound better? There are ways to improve the acoustic tone. but they are not easy to do. I would say you should look for another AS200 from the early 1980's and try the tone on that. then make your decision. Seymore Ducan 59 and JB. Now I completly love the sound. It changed the tone tremendously. The tone isn't stiff anymore. Now I have everything that I expected from JSM100. I absolutely love this guitar, It is amazing. Sorry for my early stupid complains about JSM100.
