I have a 2001 AS 80 NOS I discovered in a warehouse music store in Florida. Everything worked great, then the tone pots quit working. (no change in tone while adjusting the pot). What should I check? Control switch for pick ups? input jack on guitar? caps on the pots? It was nice to find a brand new AS80 anyway. I bought the vintage burst and there is a sunburst still for sale. It was a little high priced ($718.00 with SKB hard case and shipping) but where else can you buy a fantastic Ibanez that's been out of production. The quality in the wood and craftmanship in these two instruments was unreal. I don't know if someone was holding on to them for that reason or what. They have an aged tint to the clear and used tiger stripped wood of some type. It looks like the top, back, and sides are solid with no lamination. The pick ups don't say 58 or super 58 on them. They do have wax covering the back. It's made in Korea. What is the normal make up of woods in an AS80? Anyway enough on the stoke with this axe, can you help me with the pots? Thanks, Mike |

Ratfinks3: Can't answer the pots question, but others around here are experts in this area and should have you covered on this issue. The catalog says that the 2001 AS80 has maple top, back and sides. The pickups are Super 58s. Are you saying that there were two 2001 AS80s in different finishes? The catalog only shows one: VB. |

Yep, two 2001 AS 80's. Vintageburst and Sunburst. Everything else is the same. Perhaps they are 2002's but I thought the AS 80 was out of production by then? My S# is 01020121 I'm calling the place back to check the S numbers on the Sunburst. They may be adjacent numbers and that is why some sales person was hiding them for their stash at a later time. Do you think they would be worth collecting being production brothers? What would the value be? I'd have about 1450.00 in the both of them with shipping and SKB cases. |

Hey Ratfinks The problem with your tone pot is more likely the fact that the carbon in the post has a wear mark through it.. I suggest you replace all the pots in the guitar with some japanese ones. ( dimarzios or CTS pots have a different spline knurling and wont take the original knobs..) Replace them with 500K Analog taper pots and you will notice a difference. While your at it replace the caps with 0.22uf caps.. |

Spiro, when the pots quit working they stopped slowly as if something was burning out. They were not scratchy and went from perfect to not working at all. All within about 60 seconds or so. Would you say it is most likely the caps? Thanks |

hmmm sounds odd but I would start maybe with a cap replacement 0.022uf (I left out a zero in the above post) in a polyester cap will do the trick.. Or if you would like go for a ceramic disc cap.. they are only few cents each from an electronics shop.. I would still be replacing pots as well down the track.. Dont buy the caps from a guitar store they sell them for a few dollars each !!! and they are exactly the same thing.. |

Ok What is the trick to getting the pots out of the F-holes? I thought about tying a thred on the post and dropping them into the body then out the f-hole? Any advise before I dig into this project? |
