I just bought my first bass. I was in a pawn shop, looking at the guitars and from a distance I saw a neat looking bass. I couldn't see the headstock, axe was hung above my head on the wall. When they got it down, headstock said "Soundgear by Ibanez." It had a $150 price tag on it. I asked the guy if it came with a case, he said yes. I said I'll give you $100 out-the-door, he said OK. It has the orihinal hardshell case , like new, It had the original warranty card, still blank. It had the little plastic piece that they slip over the controls to tell you what each knob does. It It has the original Ibanez description hand tag that shows model # and it says "1M-02 under the model number sr480-BM and the serial # is also on that tag. The other side is Ibanez logo in blue. It had a patchcord and a strap and there's only one tiny mark anywhere on the axe, on the back, I can fix it easily with stain. This axe has 3-band active EQ and it has a "balance" control which lets you favor either pup. Serial #: co2044310. Korea. Bolt on. I don't really p;ay bass but I like this one real well. I like it's looks and it's got a nice neck which has mahogony strips running through it. Weight is real comfortable and it sounds pretty decent to me. I like it. I put a new 9 volt in there and Questions: Any body know anything about this model? Did I get a decent deal for $100? What year is it made? sr480bm}}

bobzilla, that bass is worth no more then $150-$200 on the market so no great deal there and 1mo2 means that your bass was made in 2002.these sell for about $400 new.

cheers,

Bob you did ok in my opinion.

I got a EDA900 for 60 with case in 2003. But I hate the luthite body it reeks like a combo of glue and WD40.

Kid I've seen people pay twice that for an SR100 POS model with gig bag and POS amp and tuner. This isn't a bad bass for 100 with case.

Thanx guys, when I saw the bolt on and "Korea" I thought it would be around $200. Over the weekend, I looked around the web for info and the prices I saw (list price) was $699 and $799 and those prices were definitely for this model. I did see that they weren't making them anymore too. I've been playing it, it's an OK bass for me considering it's my first and I'm just a dabbler on the bass.

All the info I can find on this model has prices of $699 or $799. Yes, it's definite pertaining to this model. Why is there such a discrepancy between the $699/$799 that I find and the $200 value mentioned above? Am I doing something wrong when I conduct my searches? Am I not taking something into account?

here's one of the several things I found ....this guy paid $600 and gave a little review. But, like I said, I also saw several list prices at $699/$799. So.... why the discrepancy?

Product: Ibanez SR480
Price Paid: US $600

Great sound, out of all the basses I tried in its price range, and even a few above, it had the best tone and the versatility you have with the 3 band eq makes it stand out above the rest. I play all sorts of styles of music except metal and country and it suits me perfect.

Bobz,
It's a good, midline bass & you got a GREAT deal on it. (the case alone is worth $60-70)

AGAIN... DON'T over-analyze it! If you like it... ENJOY it!

Remember that the $699/799 prices you've seen are LIST prices & NOBODY pays list.

These "value" questions I have from time to time are just matters of curiosity for me. Nothing more. I never owned a bass, so, this instance in particular was a major curiosity for me. Like I said, I posted a guy who actually paid $600 so when you guys were syaing $200, it raised more questions, the $600 is what he actually paid, not a list price. I bought it because I liked it, without knowing anything else.

'Zilla, when I was in the market for a bass, I seriously lusted after an SR-400LA. What you have there seems to be a step or two up from the one I wanted. I don't think the SR-400 had the EQ but it *did* have the balance control. In the end though, I bought a different brand bass altogether, but the SoundGear basses are nice instruments.

I've been told I play bass like a guitar player, playing too high up the neck and not using the fat strings! I tend to play too many notes, too. I really must try harder to lock in with the kick drum.

When I'm sitting in my study at home surfing or listening to music, I almost always have my bass on my lap. I really home in on the groove the bass player and drummer set up.

Blues,

I was (& still am) a "strictly rhythm... he didn't want to make it cry or sing" type of guitar player, before I picked up bass (in '85) & I think that may have helped me transition. I originally just translated barre chords into bass runs, rather than going after intricate lead-type arpegios, etc & I think it helped me focus more on the 'root' of the music & let me find the lower groove, with the kick drum, that you & your bandmates are talking about.

Just my $.02

Bob, here's the 2001 list from Ibanezrules.com

http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/price/2001/1_J an/p04.jpg

If you look at the specs of the SR400 and SR480, you'll see the they had both the same 3 band EQ.
Main differences:
SR400: soft maple body and 3 piece laminated maple neck
SR480: MAHOGANY body and 5 piece laminated WENGE/maple neck.

It was made by Cort.
Basically it has the same neck construction as my Cort B4FL (old version with Mighty Might pups, the new ones have Bartolini pups, the body is walnut stained ash).
Anyway, if you calculate the value according to the 50-67% rule, the value is between $350-466

Even if you take a going price of $600 as a starting point: still $300-400

Kid, the SRX basses such as the SRX400 are made of less valuable materials. For a good comparison you should look at the SR500. 4-strings are still $699.-

Bob, you made an excellent deal!

Kid, it's allright, you learn pretty fast. You know more about guitars than most kids of your age.
These SoundGear model numbers are very much alike. But the wood matters. For instance, the first Cort Action bass series had an ash model for only one year, after that they only produced Agathis bodies. So when I needed some money, it was no problem selling it for 600 guilders (they were 825 guilders new), because of the wood of the body. Everybody wants swamp ash.
And it's the same with mahogany bodies (a very good tone wood, just think of the Les Paul) and with laminated wenge bass necks, because they're rock stable.

To know a little more about wood, it's nice to follow the links on the website of the Dutch wood collectors:
http://www.nehosoc.nl/links.php

The Brazilian one doesn't seem to be on the air at the moment, but the "wortelknollen" link leads to beautiful pictures of all kinds of "burls" which are available as veneers.
(Wood collectors usually collect small samples of wood.)
Here's a direct link to the woodmenu of Certainly Wood:
http://www.certainlywood.com/woodmenu.asp

I was thinking of a site with wood samples, but I can't find the bookmark, probably because I'm experimenting with the Opera 9.21 browser, but I google fast:
http://www.woodworking.org/WC/woodsampler.html
Just click on each wood name and you get a picture. Try wenge for instance. Memorize the pictures of the species that are used in lutherie and you know what to look for.

BTW, the Fender Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision Bass and Jazz Bass should be in the education program as a part of American history.

List price in that link is $699. (I know nobody pays list) A guy paid $600, I paid $100 w/original case and every bit of stuff that came with it when issued from the factory. I know they discontinued the model. I guess that's all I need to know, it's fun to have and play, that's the important thing, the rest was just curiosity.

Oops, I made a mistake about the neck construction of my Cort B4FL. I wrote about its neck construction based on the newest catalogue I was holding in my hands. I didn't take my basses out of the case for a few years now, because playing hurted too much.
The older one I have, has not only Mighty Might pickups, but also a 1 PIECE WENGE neck! (Not exactly environment-friendly). Its serial number is from January 1998: 801xxxx
The laminated necks started together with the new Cort headstocks, I think that was around 2001 or so.

One of the reasons why I find wenge such an interesting wood, is that on spanish guitars it is used as a cheaper fretboard wood. So top of the bill is ebony, then you get rosewood and then wenge (which is an African wood). So the fact that I could score a one piece wenge neck with a fretless rosewood fingering board was quite special to me.
I wonder how long these tropical woods will be available, because that CITES list is getting longer and longer.
