I have a Roadstar bass, with a cracked neck. 2 luthiers said that even repaired, it would never sound the same. Anyone here know how to obtain one...besides hunting on ebay? |

I don't mean to be facetious, but are you sure of these two's work as real luthiers. I know from experience that a lot of music stores have guys that they try to pass off as luthiers and they are really just about the same knowledge level as a good guitar tech roadie. Intonations, set ups, fret leveling and crowning. That is, however, a long way from really knowing how to repair necks properly and fixing soundboards on expensive acoustic guitars.
I know a luither that took a box full of parts, which was all that was left of what used to be a Warwick Streamer II six string bass and rebuilt it to playability again. The neck was a 7 piece neck thru and busted the headstock clean off, all the way up under the third fret.
The previous owner had thrown it off of a ten foot stage to a concrete floor. Once that was done, restoration was possible, but not the oil finish, the filling was too obvious, he had to go with a pearl white paint finish. Paint feels different than oil finish, but not bad, just different.
I tell this story because, if your neck is just cracked a real luthier can fix it with out detrimental affect to the sustain or the sound. It's done to valuable pre-CBS Fender's and old Gibson's all the time. I fail to see how your Ibanez couldn't be fixed right too.
If the damage is more extensive than a crack, then fixing it might have some effect on its playability. |
