I recently bought a 1980 MC-924. First of all, I'd like to know what the proper use/function of the 3rd "Boost/Cut" pot is (not the 3 EQ knobs). What is being boosted or cut? There's also no middle notch on it...

Also, the frets on this bass are worn down the point that the action has had to be raised a lot to avoid buzz, but now its pretty uncomfortable to play...any suggestions, other than spending another $250 on refretting?
