I just bought a very pretty Soundgear. It's an '87 Soundgear lefty, solid black (according to the serial number). Fantastic instrument, in near-perfect state, and it almost plays by itself. Something strange though: on the back of the headstock, the label says 'SR1000E'. However, I'm pretty certain it is not an SR1000E. 1000-series Soundgears always have a carved top, mine is just basic flat. Besides, the SR1000E should have gold hardware (mine has black) and an ebony fingerboard (mine is rosewood). And most of all, no documentation I can get hold of mentions a lefty SR1000E. Besides, I can't find other higher-range SR's that were offered in a lefthanded version in 1987. The SR800LE L wasn't made until 1988, and the SR800 L came out in 1990, for as far as I can find. So this is a pretty strange story. Does anyone know about this, or know someone who might be able to help me out on this? I would be very thankfull!

Are you sure it's not a '97? What is the complete serial number? Is there a "CE" designation anywhere on it?

Literature/info for 1987 is almost non-existant.

Yes, I'm positively sure it's an '87. It has the old 'Regulated Lo-Z'-pickups, the long-gone Omni-Adjust bridge, no All Access Neck Joint and the two-band EQ that was later replaced by a three-band. Serial No. is F764625, so it's definitely an '87.

"1000-series Soundgears always have a carved top..."

Apparently in '87 they were flat!

Hm, I'm still not convinced
This is the '87 SR1000E: SR1000E. It has a frontmounted jack (mine has a sidemounted one), a pickupselector switch (mine has a panpot), gold hardware (mine has black), contoured body (mine is flat) and different pickups. Mine looks like this SR800LE (but black).
But thank you so far!

I think that your bass is a SR800LE. I'm shure that Ibanez never made the SR1000 as a lefty.

Hey, I see that name a lot on different websites! Are you the same Olaf Reijnders who offered me a lefty SR800 as a reply to my ad on marktplaats.nl in search of a lefty ATK300? Or am I mistaking you with somebody else now? I wasn't looking for a Soundgear back then, and still wasn't looking for one now, but stumbled upon one for just 95 euros and just HAD to buy it. The price is an absolute steal!

I think I also responded to an ad of yours for your Ibanez Jazzbass-copy once - but couldn't afford it back then.

I didn't sell my Jazz Bass and i'm glad of this. I added a J- Retro to it and the bass has a killer tone now.
I never sold an SR800. Maybe an other bass? A Bass Collection?

Must have been someone else then, I must be mistaking. I think I did get a reply from you during my quest though, on the Lefty Bass Yahoo Group. I looked it up. You were the only one replying in Dutch (actually the only one replying AT ALL, lol), with 'tja, een ATK wil ik ook wel!' . Well, I never got one. The one I went out for turned out to be a Korean one instead of a Japanese one, and not a pretty one either, with strings that were at least 4 years old, so I never got to let its true tone shine. I didn't dare to buy it, I didn't know what I would get. If I ever find a Japanese one again, I'll be all over it for sure!

Hee, Jeroen. Medekaaskop. Do you know www.leftybass.com? I thought that there were some ATK's for sale. Check it out.

Yes, I am registered on leftybass.com by my full name, Jeroen Gahrmann. My profile is not complete and accurate, it says I already have an ATK300 because I registered there the day before I went to look at the ATK and assumed that I'd take it home with me. I emailed Arni that I bought a secondhand custom made '59 Precision-copy instead and that the ATK could be removed from the gearlist, but he only removed it from my text and not the gearlist below, lol.

I'm not actively searching for an ATK right now, I can't miss the money at the moment. I'm taking driving classes and am in the last year of my studies (very busy year, and no income) so I really can't afford another bass right now. There still is a 'wanted'-ad on leftybass.com though, Arni says he can't remove it...

Thanks for the tip, I'll check the inside of the electronics cavity cover!

Well, I opened the cover today (to check for a trimpot to lower the output, actually! This bass is louder than anything I've ever played! Didn't find one, but DID find two in my other active bass, so I boosted the output on that one, lol). There's nothing inscribed on the plate, however. I've emailed some pictures to Jerry of the Ibanez Register though, and he's also responded the bass couldn't possibly be an SR1000E. So I'll settle for it being an SR800LE after all
