I just purchased a 1979 Ibanez MC924 which I love! It is the fretted model with two single coils. My only knock on it (apart from its heft) is that the single coils get very noisy with an irritating hum when it is in active mode and the hum doesn't seem to be the normal 60cycle hum. They are relatively quiet when passive. The only solution appears to be to limit the amount of active gain, which kind of defeats the purpose. Is this normal for this model? I have also noticed that when the bass is in passive mode, I thought that the active boost control knob was supposed to become the tone control which doesn't seem to be happening. The store where I bought this used (30th Street Guitars in NYC - Great store, btw!) seems to think that this is normal. Can anyone help me out with advice to tame this hum. Do I need new pickups or a new pot? Or should I just shut up and deal with it? Does anyone have any literature or info from Ibanez that explains the controls for this bass? Thanks for any and all help!!!! |
