Hey,
I just bought an Ibanez copy of the famous rickenbacker 4001 bass and I'm looking for some more information about this bass. Does anyone here know anything about when it was built and how much it did cost back in the day?

Hi Reinier!
Fellow Dutchman, I suppose? Before I can tell you more about it, please give some more information about the colour, the pickups (big neck-pickup like Gibson EB 3 or small one , like the real Rick?), serial number? You must know that Ibanez made several Rick 4001 models (stereo, mono, neck-through body, bolt on necks, various colours etc.)
Not planning on selling it?

yes indeed a fellow dutchman here! anyway the guitar does not have a serial number and if I'm not mistaking that means it's made before 1975? The colour is what Rickenbacker calles flame or something like that (it's a sort of red sunburts only different) it has a bolt on neck and ofcourse two pick ups. The neck pick up looks really like a Rick pick up (the pick ups used on their 4003 basses) it's a small black pick up, the body pick up is ofcourse quite big and looks like a pick from a jazz bass. Next to the neck pickup is a small black piece of wood/plastic just like the real Rick has. I'm not quite sure if the guitar is mono or stereo, there are two volume controlles on the guitar and I don't know if that means that it's stereo. Btw. the neck has pearl triangles instead of dots.
I think that's most of the info I have hopefully you can tell me some more about this beautifull bass.

btw. when I say that the pick up on the body looks like a jazz bass pick up I mean the chrome plate over the pick up (maybe I'd better describe it in dutch, ik bedoel dus de bescherm kap over het brug element) |

Hey Reinier!
Okay, it's all clear! You have a 2388 B/MR, but the neck pickup gives me some riddles. Ibanez had either a small chrome pickup or a big chrome pickup, but until now I never saw the black pickups pictured in any catalogue. Sure you have an Ibanez? The brand name should be embossed in the trussrod cover (the long pointy triangular white plastic plate on the headstock). Okay: I may be not complete on my info there. Let's presume it's really an Ibanez: you have the "simple" bolt-on version, because Ibanez made Ricks with set necks too. Stereo or mono: if your bass has two output jacks it's stereo. One output means (of course) it's mono. The colour: Rickenbacker refered to this finish as "fireglow", in Ibanez catalogues and pricelists it is called "maroon". Ibanez started using serial numbers after mid-1975. So yours is an old one, but difficult to date exactly.

thanx for the reply! I'm pretty sure my bass is an Ibanez (It has the logo embossed in the trussrod cover) and the colour is indeed maroon. The neck pick up puzzles me a bit too, I couldn't find a black pick up on any of the Ibanez "Rick" bass models. The pick up really looks like a pick up from a Rick (4003) maybe Ibanez made a few basses with a different neck pick up or something like that.
