ok so I've got an Ibanez 2388 "Rick" bass (atleast I think so) and according to the Vintage Ibanez page of Hasy and Harry it was built in 1973 (it has no serial number and the way "Made In Japan" is print indicates that is was made in 1973). Anyway I've checked out all the pics I could find of Ibanez 2388 rick basses but I could find no bass that has a black neck pick-up, they all have either big chrome plates over it or small chrome ones. The pick-up on my bass looks exactly like the ones used on the real Ricks (4001 and 4003). I know for sure that my bass isn't a Rick since Rickenbacker never made basses in Japan and my bass has a bolt-on-neck while Ricks always have neck-through-bodys type necks. Can anyone help me and give me some more info about when my bass was built and if it is an Ibanez yes or no? |

Hi Bug!
Are you sure it is an Ibanez? If so, there must be the Ibanez-logo on the truss rod cover plate. If this plate is missing, you'll never know for sure if it's a pre-75 Ibanez.
I too never saw (uptil now) an Ibanez Rick copy with the "correct" pickup in neck position. I once owned a Hondo Rickenbacker 4001 copy that was fairly correct built and which had a very Rick-like neck pickup.

Hey Harry,
well the problem is when I first bought the bass it had a Rickenbacker truss rod cover, but I knew it couldn't be a Rick because of the bolt on style neck and the "made in Japan" written on the neck plate. In one of the pockets of the case I got with it I found the Ibanez truss rod cover,so I think someone just screwed the Ibanez cover off an put a Rick cover on. Anyway the truss rod cover looks exactly like the one pictured on your page (1970 to 1975 burned,inlay Rickenbacker, Firebird, V Models) and the "Made in Japan" looks like the "1970 to 1974 Made in Japan" light stamp inlay no serial numbers"if you know what I mean. The only thing that really puzzles me is the neck pick up, maybe some previous owner has put some real Rick pick ups in the guitar? or maybe Ibanez made a few 2388 models with different pick ups? is that possible?

Yes, could be. If you go to Hasy and my ibanez vintage page and look under "Collectors" you see that I own a Rickenbacker semi-acoustic. That guitar was "tuned up" also by it's previous owner with original Rickenbacker parts. Lucky enough he brought the guitar back in it's original setup before he sold it. What I mean is: many Ibanez owners modified their instrument to make them at least look like the original. And it's true that the old Ibanez guitars and basses didn't sound very good because they had Maxon pickups. So by exchanging the pickups the instrument would really sound better. Did you search for any clue on the pickup (the back side) to find out what brand it is? I am convinced your bass is an Ibanez; I don't think anyone would put an Ibanez trussrodcover plate in the pocket of the case for no reason.
