I have this bass. I found it in a music shop for 195.00 2 years ago. Somebody had butchered it by stripping its finish and replacing the neck with a fretless one peice maple. There is no inlay left at all because the pickguard was replaced with a Fender Jazz style pick guard and dimmarzio pups. I would like to find some parts to restore it but as it is now I like it. It weighs a lot. Its sounds great. I guess all I have left of it's original form is thge body tuners neck plate and controls.

I bet the guy in Taiwan who does guitar inlay (mentioned somewhere on the board here-- he sells his work on ebay) could do the neck and body inlay if he had good pics of an original one. His prices have been quite reasonable. I assume you want it all funky with the eagle and cool fretboard inlay.

Hi: I realize now that the body inlay is just on the pickguard. Maybe you could send the guy in Taiwan a jazz bass scratchplate if it's the same shape, and he could inlay it with abalone. You could find a jazz bass neck and send it to him for the inlay-- you would not have to send the entire guitar (just the scratchplate and neck). Then have the body pro painted black. Sell the fretless neck on ebay. Am I missing something, or this as doable as I think it is?

If you do it, please give me the price for the scratchplate. It would probably look really cool on a standard black jazz bass!

Thanks for the info, I'll look into it. The bass was made in 76. The tag in the store said Ibanez black bird. But I knew what it was. Maybe I'll keep the neck for another bass because I like fretless too!

Ibanezfreak, does it still have the original neck with cut-outs in headstock? Or a standard JB neck instead.. Do you mean this guy, btw..

The original neck is long gone. If you look at the string alignment you can see the Black Eagle neck was wider.

Correction the string alignment doesn't tell that it is the gap that is in the neck joint to the body which you cant see in this picture.
